My Forever Valentine 我永远的“情人”
Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly (天真的) thought 1 him as my “Valentine man”.
My first recollection of the 2 he could bring to Valentine’s Day came when I was six. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was 3 “Love, Dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to 4 my birthstone, a ruby (红宝石). There is 5 difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember 6 that ring with pride that all the cards in the world 7 not surpass (超越).
8 I grew older, the gifts gave 9 to heart-shaped boxes filled with my 10__ chocolate and always included a 11 card signed “Love, Dad”. In those years my thank-you became 12 of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. The cards seemed less 13 , and I took for granted that the Valentine would 14 be there. I had 15 my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “Love Dad” just didn’t seem quite 16 .
His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a 17 of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a 18_ of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.
Those things never 19 , nor does the memory of a man who never 20 being my Valentine.

How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts(偷窃)? Around the holidays, many families don’t consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.
● Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.
● Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器)。Don’t leave your outdoor lights on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights. If an outdoor light remains on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.
● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.
● Close all your curtains when you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don’t know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break in.
● This article just has suggested a few tips to help you keep your house safe while you are on holiday. Nothing can truly protect your home unless you have it monitored by a professional home security system.

Cancun is a seaside town in Mexico, where most tourists come here to enjoy the beach, water sports and night life. In fact, it is so modern and Americanized that you might think you were in southern California or Florida.
But just a short two-hour hike from the town lie the ruins of the city of Chichen-Itza, one of the capitals of the lost Maya(玛雅)civilization. The center of the ruins of this city is the pyramid of El Castillo. The ancient Mayan religious people climbed this pyramid during festival to honor the Sun god. Tourists today climb it to view the architectural achievements of Chichen-Itza and to prove their fearlessness of heights and steep (陡峭的)climbs. There is a sign in Spanish, admonishing visitors “It’s dangerous to go up.” I gladly ignored it and started my climb.
The climbing was tough. The steps were higher than one might normally take., but the climb was not fearful at all. From the top of the pyramid, I had a wonderful view of the ruins of this Mayan city. What was most striking to me was that just beyond the ruins of splendid structures, gardens, temples and what looks like a modern sports stadium, you could only see forests for miles and miles. It was almost as if some race had mysteriously come out of nowhere, built it up and then suddenly disappeared from the planet, leaving only stones in its space.
The only remains on the top of the pyramid were the Temple of Kukulcan. During the festivals to worship the Sun god, only the high ranks would have the right to enter this temple.
After shooting a few pictures, I realized it was time to go down. Only then did I discover that what people fear about the climb is not the trip going up, but the way going down. I saw a few brave souls who were walking down as if they were in their own house. Looking down at the steepness of the pyramid, I desperately feared this great height. My first desire was to joke with a few people, “Where is the elevator(电梯)?” I figured that a civilization that was this advanced would have had the foresight(预见) to construct an elevator. Lacking such modern equipment, I had to use the chain provided by the Mexican tourist authorities and climb down on all fours.
My climb was complete eventually. I quickly got on the bus back to my comfortable hotel. Leaving the ruined city, I was still wondering what possibly happened long ago. But a few hours later, I was back in the modern world drinking cocktails on the beach, bathing in the sunshine before boarding the plane and waiting for my trip back home to the US, where all the modern things such as elevators are available!

American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood,it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes(淋巴细胞).The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes. Then it forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.
Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from connecting to T4 ceils. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell,it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.
Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to cloned protein instead of the real ones.Scientists use genetic engineering methods to make the clones.Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times;the AIDS virus must go to it.
In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell.It floats freely,so a lot more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 protein on T4 cells. One report says the.AIDS virus connects to cloned protein just as effectively as it connects to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning to be tested in animals. If successful,it may be tested in humans within a year.
