Many years ago,I owned a service station and roadhouse on the main road between Melbourne and Adelaide.

One very cold, wet night at about 3:30 a.m.,there was a ¡¡ 16¡¡ on the front door of our house.A young man,wet from ¡¡¡¡ 17¡¡¡¡ to toe, explained that he had ¡¡¡¡ 18¡¡¡¡ out of petrol about 30 km up the road.He had left his pregnant(»³ÔеÄ) wife and his two children ¡¡ 19¡¡ at the car and said that he would hitchhike(´î±ã³µ) back.

Once I had ¡¡ 20¡¡ a can with petrol,I took him back to his car where his two-year-old and four-year-old children were both ¡¡ 21 ,saying that they were cold.Once the car had started,I suggested that he ¡¡ 22¡¡ me back.

Before leaving,I had turned the heater ¡¡23¡¡ in the roadhouse,so that when we went in,it was nice and ¡¡ 24 .While the little ones played and ran ¡¡ 25¡¡ ,I prepared bread and butter for the children, and hot chocolate for the ¡¡26 .

It was about 5 a.m. before they ¡¡27 .The young fellow asked me how much he ¡¡ 28¡¡ me and I told him that the petrol pump(¼ÓÓͱÃ) had ¡¡ 29¡¡ $15.He offered to pay ¡°call-out fee¡±,but I wouldn¡¯t accept it.

About a month later,I received a ¡¡ 30¡¡ from Interstate,a large bus company that we bad been trying to ¡¡ 31¡¡ to stop off at our roadhouse for a long time.It ¡¡ 32¡¡ out that the young fellow I had helped was its general manager, the most ¡¡33 person in the company.

In his letter,he thanked me again and ¡¡ 34 me that, from then on,all their buses would stop at my service station. In this ¡¡ 35¡¡ ,a little bit of kindness was rewarded with a huge amount of benefits.

When I was a child, my mom liked to prepare food for dinner, every now and then. And I remember one night in 41 when she made dinner after a long, hard day at work.

That Monday evening so long ago, my mom 42 a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burnt toast (ÍÁ˾) in front of my dad. I remember 43 to see if dad noticed! 44 all my dad did was reach for his toast, smile at my mom, and ask me how my day was 45 . I don¡¯t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him 46 butter and jelly (¹û¶³) on that toast and eat every 47 !

When I got up from the 48 that evening, I remember hearing my mom 49 to my dad for burning the toast. And I¡¯ll never forget what he said: ¡°Baby, I love 50 toast.¡±

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy goodnight and I asked him if he 51 liked his burnt toast. He 52 me in his arms and said, ¡°Son, your mum put in a 53 day at work today and she¡¯s very 54 . Besides, a little burnt toast never 55 anyone!¡±

Actually, life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. We can¡¯t be 56 at everything we do. What I¡¯ve learned over the years is that learning to 57 each other¡¯s faults and choosing to celebrate each other¡¯s 58 is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting 59 .

If you learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life as they are, you can 60 your life to the fullest.

I remember the first time I saw Gretchen Buchenholz doing what she does best. It was the fall of 2002, and she was standing at the door of a New York day-care ¡¡26 that she¡¯d founded for disadvantaged and special-needs ¡¡27 . A stream of little kids was entering the building, and some were ¡¡28 walkers (ѧ²½³µ). Gretchen knelt down ¡¡29 each child, greeting each by name and saying ¡¡30 personal. The kids smiled happily and their little ¡¡31 lit up.

¡¡ It was at that time that I made my final decision to ¡¡32 my job as a lawyer. I had decided to ¡¡¡¡¡¡__33__ as director of community affairs for the Association to Benefit Children (ABC), the nonprofit (·ÇÓ®ÀûµÄ) group that Gretchen started 20 years ago. When I was ¡¡34 , my family had often been helped by others. Mom always told us that we should help the ¡¡35__ when we grew up.

¡¡ The story of how Gretchen started ABC is quite amazing. In 1984, she was on her way to a government office to get a day-care permit, but by accident, she entered a room where homeless families were waiting to be ¡¡36 in a ¡°welfare hotel¡±. She saw three babies. The babies wore no diapers (Äò²¼) as their parents couldn¡¯t ¡¡37 any. After talking to the ¡¡38 and learning they and their babies were ¡¡__39 , Gretchen went out and bought bread, peanut butter, apple juice and diapers. Then she started making phone calls. She dialed the American Red Cross, City Hall and The New York Times. Finally, she helped set up housing for them and other homeless ¡¡40 like them.

¡¡ I wish there were more people like her.

"This Friday we'll have the yearly Egg Drop Challenge," said our science teacher, Mr. Baker. "You can work alone or with a partner."

¡¡ "Then I'll build mine and you build yours!"

¡¡ When Friday finally arrived, I had to¡¡ 41¡¡ Cassie's Egg Force One looked pretty good. 42 , my Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn't look quite scientific. This would go on till the last egg broke.

¡¡ After four rounds, only Cassie and I were¡¡¡¡ 44¡¡ . I let go of my box. I heard someone say "ew" after seconds. Had my egg broken? I raced down the¡¡ 45¡¡ . The sidewalk was dotted with egg shells (µ°¿Ç) from those ¡¡ 46¡¡ drops. Finally I found my little Egg-cellent Egg Cream.

¡¡ "My egg bounced ¡¡ 49 _," she explained, pointing to a broken shell.

¡¡ "A tie £¨Æ½¾Ö)," Mr. Baker said.
