Reading Comprehension

Read the following passages, and choose the best answer that can answer the question.

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5, 000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid.

Some of the, pyramids still look much as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to protect the pyramids, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever.

It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been protected. However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. Therefore we are only able to guess at the methods used. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists(建筑师) have formed a fairly clear picture of them.

One thing is certain; there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but as pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to be overcome.

The step pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile; the side on which the sun set. This was religious reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital, or better still, near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily and personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.

1.We can guess how the pyramids were built because archaeologists have ________.

[ ]

A.studied them and the tools used to build them

B.found the plans of some of them

C.found paintings showing each stage of construction

D.found descriptions of how some were built

2.Why did the Egyptians build the pyramids along the banks of the Nile ________.

[ ]

A.This must have been for religious reasons.

B.It was difficult to find large rock bases far from the river.

C.Pyramids had to be. built on the Westside of the Nile.

D.The river gave them a lot of sand for building.

3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

[ ]

A.Kings regularly visited their pyramids to check on their progress.

B.All pyramids were built very close to each other.

C.The pyramids were built on bases of rock.

D.Boats were used to transport stones.

4.Generally speaking, ________.

[ ]

A.all pyramids are the same

B.there are two kinds of pyramids-“step” and “bent”

C.all the pyramids are standing together

D.the pyramids seems to continue to stand, but they are sure to fall down within a thousand years.

5.________ has helped the pyramids be free from complete destruction?

[ ]

A.The wind
B.The people
C.The special climate
D.The government

Reading comprehension(阅读理解)

Sad stories are not very nice to read about, but if we think and talk about them, we may be able to prevent more accidents.

How can fire or hot things be a danger in the house?Matches, of course, are always dangerous in the hands of young children.A little fire on waste land can easily get out of control.A wind comes, sparks(火花)are blown on to the roof of a house, and the whole building may be burnt to the ground before you can even call the fire brigade.Kerosene(煤油)lamps, too, can be very dangerous.Quite recently there was a bad accident in a village house. The mosquito-net(蚊帐)over a baby’s bed was blown against a lamp and caught fire. The bed-clothes and even the clothes of the baby were burnt before the fire was discovered.

Long grass rubbish round a house can also lead to a big fire, as most people know. However, not everybody is careful with such things as paper bags and toys; these burn up in a flash if you hold them near a fire.

Young children often reach up to a table to take a bottle down by its handle. If the bottle or pot is full of boiling water, you can guess what will happen.Similarly, when a baby’s bath is prepared, cold water should be put in first. If any hot water has to be used, this should be put into the bath after the cold water and not before it.

Many fireworks(烟花)can lead to blindness or other injuries, especially those which are pushed into bamboo sticks.Wooden spears or swords should be used only by children with sense enough not to injure other people.

Very young children often have to be watched carefully. They put everything they find into their mouths to see whether it can be eaten, or sucked!Medicines have to be put out of their reach.A pill which might be harmless for an adult can sometimes kill a baby.Older children have to be careful when drinking from a bottle. Some of them walk about as they drink.Tip up the bottle to get the last drop out, then fall over something on the ground. If they are unlucky, they fall in such a way that the broken glass makes a horrible wound in the face or neck.

This is not a complete list of the dangers in and near a house, but it is enough to remind you to be careful.

READING COMPREHENSION

A previously unknown kind of human group disappeared from the world so completely that it has left behind the merest piece of evidence that it ever existed-a single bone from the little finger of a child, buried in a cave in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia.

Researchers removed DNA from the bone and reported that it differed obviously from that of both modern humans and of Neanderthals(尼安德特人), living in Europe until the arrival of modern humans on the continent some 44,000 years ago.

The child carrying the DNA line was probably 5 to 7 years old, but it is not yet known if it was a boy or a girl. The finger bone was unearthed in 2008 from a place known as the Denisova cave.

Researchers are careful not to call the Denisova child a new human species, though it may prove to be so, because the evidence is initial.

But the genetic material removed from the bone, found in a layer laid down on the cave floor between 48,000 and 30,000 years ago, belonged to a distinct human line that traveled out of Africa at a different time from the two known ancient human species.Homo erectus(直立人), found in East Asia, left Africa two million years ago, and the ancestor of Neanderthals moved away some 500,000 years ago.The numbers of differences found in the child’s DNA indicate that its ancestors left Africa about one million years ago.

The region was inhabited by both Neanderthals and modern humans at that time.Counting the new human line, three human species may have lived together.

The standard view has long been that there were three human resettlements out of Africa-those of Homo erectus; of the ancestor of Neanderthals; and finally, some 50,000 years ago, of modern humans. But in 2004, archaeologists reported that they had found the bones of small humans who lived on the Indonesian island of Flores until 13,000 years ago, causing a serious problem to this view. The new line is the second such challenge.

If the nuclear DNA of the Denisova child should differ as much as its mitochondrial(线粒体)DNA does from that of Neanderthals and modern humans, the case for declaring it a new species would be strengthened. But it would be unusual for a new species to be recognized on the basis of DNA alone.

In new diggings starting this summer, archaeologists will look for remains more analytical than the finger bone.Researchers will also begin re-examining the fossil collections in museums to see if any wrongly assigned bones might belong instead to the new line

Reading Comprehension

The Part of the environmental movement that draws my firm’s attention is the design of cities, buildings and products. When we designed America’s first so-called“green”office building in New York two decades ago, we felt very alone. But today, thousands of people come to green building conferences, and the 1 that buildings can be good for people and the environment will be increasingly influential in years to 2

Back in 1984, we discovered that most manufactured products for decoration weren’t designed for 3 use.The“energy-efficient”sealed commercial buildings constructed after the 1970s energy crisis 4 indoor air quality problems caused by materials such as paint, wall covering and carpet. So far 20 years, we’ve been focusing on these materials down to the molecules(分子), looking for ways to make them 5 for people and the planet.

Home builders can now use materials-such as paints that release significantly reduced amounts of organic(有机物的)compounds-that don’t 6 the quality of the air, water, or soil.Ultimately(最终), however, our basic design strategy is focused not simply on being ‘less bad’ but on creating 7 healthful materials that can be either safely returned to the soil 8 reused by industry again and again. As a matter of 9 , the world’s largest carpet manufacturer has already 10 a carpet that is fully and safely recyclable.

Look at it this way:No one 11 out to create a building that destroys the planet. But our current industrial systems are 12 causing these conditions, whether we like it or not.So 13 of simply trying to reduce the derange, we are 14 a positive approach. We’re giving people high-quality, healthful products and an opportunity to make choices that has a 15 effect on the world. It’s not just the building industry, either.Entire cities are taking these environmentally positive approaches to design, planning and building.Portland, Seattle and Boston have said they want to be green cities.Chicago wants to be the greenest city in the world.
