This March, the H7N9 virus hit Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu and so on. It seemed that most people who were infected(被感染)with H7N9 had the common flu. Some people suffered from a fever or a cough.
Don’t be afraid---it’s not easy to be infected with the virus. Here is some advice to help you protect yourself when it comes.
Wash your hands. You need to wash your hands with soap and hot water before you eat, after you use the toilet , and after you touch animals, because your hands may carry viruses.
Cover your nose and mouth, when someone sneezes(打喷嚏)or coughs, flu viruses can travel as far as one meter through the air, so you’d better stand a proper distance while talking to someone who has a cold. And always cover your nose and mouth with a piece of paper when you sneeze or cough, and then clean your hands.
Wear a mask(口罩). Some doctors say that masks can stop the flu as much as 80%, but if you don’t wash your hands often, it’s no use wearing a mask. And it’s necessary to wear a mask in the groups of people.

Hello Sandy,

We have just returned from our holiday. We went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors. This is a beautiful place. It is a natural park. There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills, miles of grassland with no people, just sheep and birds.

Edward, who had just come out of hospital, could not walk as far as he used to. However this meant that we walked in the mornings, and then stopped at a cafe for lunch each day, before returning to the place we live. Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon, while the ladies went for another walk. Very pleasant!

I have taken lots of photos from the place we live, across the valley(峡谷)below us, of the morning sunrise, and the mist in the valley. Also, in England, the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火车)are very popular. I have taken many photos of the train and from it.

Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter. It is very early (we usually expect snow in January). It rained all day, and then snowed in the evening. Today we have bright sunshine!

Both Jenny and I are well. I don’t know if I told you, in the last E-mail, that Jenny is now working in a hotel. Although she has to work hard, people there are nice and she is enjoying the work.

Please write to us to tell us your news.

Yours,

Victor

Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance(距离) away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.

This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight(太阳光) takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light that you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km. per minute. In some cases, the light from one of tonight’s stars had started on its journey to you before you were born.

Thus, if we want to be honest, we can’t say, “The stars are shining tonight.” We have to say instead, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago, but their light has only just reached the earth.”

1.Light speed is ______ sound speed.

A. as fast as

B. a million times slower than

C. about millions of times faster than

D. about a million times faster than

2. If you stand 200 meters away from a man who is firing a gun to start a race, you will find out that ______.

A. you can hear the sound before you see the smoke

B. the sound does not travel as fast as light

C. the sound will reach you before the man fires

D. sound travels about a million times faster than light

3.Sunlight obviously(显然的) ______ than the light of the moon.

A. has to travel a greater distance

B. moves less quickly

C. travels much more quickly

D. is less powerful

4. The scientific way of saying "The stars are shining tonight" should be ______.

A. the stars have been shining all the time

B. the stars seen tonight will shine four years later

C. the stars were shining long ago but seen tonight

D. the starlight seen today could be seen four years ago

Have you ever heard an echo of your voice?

An echo is a reflected(反射)sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall with nothing on the walls. Then shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called “echoes”.

We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. It does not travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard(纸板筒).

Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the roll to your ear.

A megaphone(喇叭筒)works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a beam which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.

We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for example. Among the animals, bats and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near them.

c. The sound hits the walls          d. We make a sound

A.c, b, a, d

B.c, a, b, d

C.d, c, b, a

D.d, b, c, a

2.. From the text we learn that __________ .

A.reflected sound is useful only to blind people

B.people haven’t made use of reflected sound yet

C.bats use reflected sound to fly and get food

D.whales don’t use reflected sound as they live in the sea

3. If you haven’t got a megaphone, ____ will help you to make your voice travel farther.
