One terribly cold day, a snowstorm hit our area. Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. (1) So to have a friend who could warn me of dangerso was important.
When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, Bruce suddenly warned me, “Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!” I wasn’t sure about it. The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I had been shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what happened, she quickly called the power company. Workers from the power company soon arrived. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale. “You should have been killed,” he said. It was my boots that saved my life.
(3)Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down——but not my mother. Even though she was glad that I wasn’t hurt, my mother was still serious with me. After all(毕竟), I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.

One of the most powerful tools you can use to improve your reading comprehension is mind mapping. It is possible to create maps by simply using a pen and paper.

The first step is to draw a circle or box at the center of the page. Inside your shape write down the main idea that your mind map will focus upon. For example , if you were creating a mind map about the geography of the United States , then you would write down “the geography of the United States” in the middle of your page inside your circle.

Next you draw branches from your central idea. Much like a tree grows branches . Simply draw a line moving away from the central theme. In the case of the geography of the United States , you would probably draw 50 lines. Each line represents one of 50 states. These are the main categories(分类) with your primary concept(概念).

Each of lines can then have branches off of each. These would represent the main example under each category. For example , under the line titled, “ Texas,” you would find lines called Austin, Houston, and Dallas, you might draw a series of lines to represent some of its main sections like “ South Dallas” and “ Highland Park” .

You continue to draw your mind map much like the structure of branches on a tree. Mind map helps improve your comprehension because they enable you to quickly see relationships between main ideas, categories , examples, and details that might otherwise be missed if you use more traditional note taking strategies(策略).

If you are lost in the mountains, stay calm in the face of darkness, loneliness, and the unknown. It will greatly increase your chances of survival. If you get frostbite(冻伤), do not rewarm the affected area until you’re out of danger. You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

Oxford graduates sell faces to pay £50,000 university debts
