One girl got halfway through, became 53 and stopped. As the other children laughed, 54 rolled down her cheeks. I gave her a hug and told her to have a drink of water. Then, remembering Mrs. Cooper, I fixed 55 of the class with a firm look. “We are all here to learn,” I said.

The girl died two hours later. The elder brother took a bag of gold from his pocket and offered it to me.
“Please excuse me.” I said. “At this moment, no.”
The two brothers looked at each other. I bowed to them and left without another word.
Early the next morning the bag of gold was left at my house. I had decided to write to the Minister telling him about this matter. Just as I had finished my letter I was told that a young lady wished to see me. In some way she had discovered the main facts of the story. Her husband was the younger brother. She did not know that the girl was dead, but hoped to help in some way. I told her all I knew. When I went with her to the door I saw in her carriage a boy aged about three.
“For my child's sake (缘故), Doctor,” she said,“I want to do all I can for this cruelly wronged family. If I do not, this will become a curse (灾祸) to him. I have a feeling that he may be forced to pay for these wrong someday, if nothing is done. I have some jewels; I shall order him on my deathbed give them to this family which his father has wronged.”
She had referred to her husband's name, thinking that I knew it, but I made no change in the letter and posted it myself that day.
