The American Thanksgiving Day celebration goes back to 1621. In that year a special dinner was prepared in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The people who had settled there had left England because they felt denied (遭到否定) of religious freedom. They came to the new land and faced difficulties in coming across the ocean. The ship which carried them was called the Mayflower. The North Atlantic was difficult to travel. There were bad storms. They were assisted in learning to live in the new land by the Indians who had already settled down in the region. The Puritans(清教徒), as they were called, had much to be thankful for. Their religious practices were no longer a source of criticism by the government. They learned to adjust (调整) their farming habits to the climate and soil. When they selected the fourth Thursday of November for their Thanksgiving celebration, they invited their neighbors, the Indians, to join them in dinner and prayer of thankfulness for the new life. They recalled the group of 102 men, women, and children who left England. They remembered their dead who did not live to see the shores of Massachusetts. They reflected on the 65 days' journey which had tested their strength.

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course , there have always been people who have looked for adventure---- those who have climbed the highest mountains , travelled in unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans . Now , however , there are people who hunt for an immediate excitement from a dangerous activity , which may only last a few minutes or even seconds .

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity . You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot - air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (弹性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground . It is said that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping . Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high mountains .

Why do people take part in such activities as these ? Some scientists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and uninteresting . Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food. If they were badly ill ,it was not easy for them to get well again , In fact , life was a continuous battle for living and existing.

Nowadays , according to many people , life offers little excitement . They live and work in safe conditions , they buy food in shops ,and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill . The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping .

The young people who talk of the village as being“dead”are talking nothing but nonsense, as in their hearts they must surely know.

No, the village is not dead. There is more life in it now than there ever was. But it seems that“village life”is dead. Gone forever. It began to decline(变弱)about a hundred years ago. When many girls left home to go into service in town many miles away, and men also left home in increasing numbers in search of work, and home was where work was. There is still a number of people alive today who can remember what “village life”meant in the early years of the present century. It meant knowing and being known by everybody else in the village. It mesas finding Your entertainment in the village of within walking distance of it. It meant housewives tied to the home all day and every day. It meant going to bed early to save lamp - oil and coal.

Then came the First World War and the Second World War. After each war, new ideas, new attitudes, new trades and occupations were revealed(展示)to villagers. The long - established order of society was no longer taken for granted. Electricity and the motorcar were steadily operating to make“village life”and“town life”almost alike. Now with the highly developed science and technology and high - level social welfare for all, there is no point whatever in talking any longer about“village life”. It is just a life, and a better life.

Finally, if we have any doubts about the future, or about the many changes which we have seen in our lives, we have only to look in at the school playground any mid - morning; or see the children as they walk homeward in little groups. Obviously these children are better fed, better clothed, better educated, healthier, prettier and happier than any generation of children that ever before walked the village street.

1.By saying that village is not dead, but“village life”is dead, the writer suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.those young people who talk of the village as being“dead”are wrong

B.the two statements are against each other

C.“village life”today is rather uninteresting

D.“village life”today is no longer like what it used to be

2.It was ________ that“village life”began to take a sharp turn.

[ ]

A.about a century ago

B.during the two world wars

C.with electricity and motorcars introduced into the village

D.only recently

3.The expression“…there is no point whatever in talking about…”in paragraph 3 means that ________.

[ ]

A.there is no end to the talking about…

B.it is harmful to talk about…

C.it is not meaningless to talk about…

D.there is no reason for talking about…

4.From the passage we can see that the writer's attitude toward“village life”is ________.

[ ]

A.positive(肯定)
B.negative(否定)
C.neutral(中立)
D.unclear
