After Maggie Doyne graduated from high school, she decided to spend a year traveling the world before starting college. The journey changed her life and the lives of hundreds of orphaned children forever.

In 2006, Doyne took a trip in Nepal, Asia. Having grown up in New Jersey, Doyne was shocked to see so many orphaned children living on the streets. She wanted to do something about it. Doyne used her savings to buy an acre of land. Then, she built the kids a home, the Kopila Valley Children's Home.

Now, the Do Something foundation is doing something for Doyne. The organization provides resources and support for teens that want to make a difference in the world. On Thursday night, the foundation named Doyne the $100,000 prize winner of the 2009 Do Something Award.

The Kopila Valley Children's Home officially opened its doors in 2008. Doyne, now 22 years old, cares for 26 kids. She has helped more than 700 other orphans find families. She also runs a program that provides scholarships for needy families to send their children to school. The children learn basic skills such as sewing and cooking. They also grow their own food in their garden and raise farm animals.

Doyne admits that she didn't have it all figured out when she first arrived in Nepal. "I just felt that there was something there for me," she said. Her parents were supportive of her. But it was a challenge to convince other adults that an 18-year-old girl could accomplish such a big project. Still, Doyne never gave up on fund raising. In just over a year, she had enough money to build her dream home.

"When all the kids are sitting at the table for breakfast, or they're happy and all dancing . . . it's the best feeling in the world." she says.

C【2011·河南省示范性高中五校联考】

What's black and orange and growing for the first time in decades? India's tiger population! On Monday, officials announced the results of the latest tiger count. The census(统计) totaled 1,706 tigers in forests across the Asian country—about 300 more than four years ago. "These numbers give us hope for the future of tigers in the world," said Jim Leape, international director of the World Wildlife Fund.

A century ago, about 100,000 tigers lived in India's forests. But by 2002, a count showed that there were only 3,600 left. The number dropped to 1,411 in 2007. What caused India's tiger population to shrink so dramatically?

More than anything else, experts say, development has taken a toll. People have moved into tiger territory and destroyed much of the animal's habitat. Today, tigers live on a just small part of the land they occupied 100 years ago.

Illegal hunting has also contributed to the decline. Poachers(盗猎者) can demand high fees for tiger parts, which are a key ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. The parts from one tiger can sell for tens of thousands of dollars.

India's news is a step in the right direction. But while the number of tigers has increased there in the last four years, the animals' habitat has shrunk. Roads and construction projects have blocked off many tiger corridors—routes used by the big cats to go from one forest to another. "Securing these corridors should be taken up as a priority," says Rajesh Gopal, of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

Last November, leaders from the 13 countries that are home to wild tigers met in St. Petersburg, Russia, to develop a plan to help the endangered cats. They set a goal to double the world's tiger population by the year 2022. Will we reach that goal? With India's tiger population on the rise and conservationists around the world focused on helping the big cats, it seems it just might happen.

63. The underlined word “shrink” in Paragraph 2 most probably means        .

A. develop           B. reduce            C. disappear        D. remove

64. Which is one of the reasons why India's tiger population declines?

A. Some living areas of India's tigers are destroyed by humans.

B. Roads and construction projects have bridged tiger corridors.

C. Some India's tigers have been hunted for to attract visitors.

D. Too many tigers are used in making traditional Chinese medicine.

65. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. 1,411 India’s tigers were killed between 2002 and 2007

B. Rajesh Gopal is in charge of the World Wildlife Fund

C. the world's tiger population will surely be doubled by 2022

D. international efforts are being made to protect India's tigers

66. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of India's tigers?

A. Critical    B. Objective    C. Optimistic    D. Concerned

If you are a fan of the Newbery-Award winning book Bridge to Terabithia, then you're going to love author Katherine Paterson's new creation The Day of the Pelican(鹈鹕). In the book, Paterson takes readers on a journey with 12 year-old Meli Lleshi and her Albanian family of seven.

The family lives in Kosovo, in eastern Europe. The country is at war with neighboring Serbia. Eventually, life becomes too dangerous in Kosovo, so the Lleshis have to pack up and move out of their home. To Meli, leaving meant giving up her whole life. She will have to say goodbye to her friends, home, school and Baba's market. Worse, the family's trouble began, in Meli's mind, when she drew a picture of her teacher with a pelican nose and had to stay after school as punishment.

As the Lleshis travel along the road at night, they come across burning homes and other refugees just like them. Living in a tiny tent surrounded by many other people becomes tiring, and but for Baba's and Mama's efforts to keep the family together, the family would probably have given up. Every night, Meli longs to go home and Baba tells her, "Your home is with your family." With everyone already crowding together for food, now is not the time to complain. The family needs all their courage to keep going. "We have to be very patient and very brave," Meli says.

Soon, traveling from place to place becomes too much of a hassle(争论) and nearly breaks the family apart. Baba makes an important decision. The family will be moving to an exciting new country. There will be no enemies and no one to run from. They will be able to stay in one place and build a new life. Although Meli still longs for home she wonders if this will finally mean freedom for her family.

The Day of the Pelican is a book you won't be able to put down. Those who enjoy realistic fiction will love this moving story about Meli and her family.
