One day last winter we received our first huge snowfall. An hour later I decided to let my dog out. That was when I got the shock! My sidewalk was cleaned and my path too. I had no idea who did this good deed. I looked over to my neighbor's driveway where the husband stood,open-mouthed and surprised. His sidewalk was also cleared. I asked him who did it. He just shook his head and let me know that he had no idea.

A week later we had another snowfall and I promised to pay attention this time just in case we had another visit from our snow angel. It was a good plan, but I got busy inside and forgot to keep a look out. Sure enough when I remembered to look out the snow had once again been cleared away.

Now I became determined to find my guardian(保护人) of the snow. Some three weeks went by when the snow started to fall again. I went to get a book and sat at the window just as the snow tapered off and my reading was interrupted by the sound of a shovel(铲子). I got to my feet to look out and was so choked up that I just stood there. My snow angel was an eight-year-old boy who lived a few houses away from me.

A month after the snows, I called him over and asked him if he knew of anybody who shoveled for me. He said, " I guess it was someone who likes you." So without taking credit for his good deed, he turned and left,

People know the dangers of fires. It's good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions:

Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off.

Make escape plans. You should know all the ways out of the house. If there is fire, every – one follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. 2.

Practise for a fire at home now and then because it can teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:

★What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop!5.         The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers told me, “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”

How right they were! Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.

“Nothing was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson..     It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” When others shout, “No, you can’t!”

It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mclintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t stop working on her experiments.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.

At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.      As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle(起皱纹) the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself. “Enthusiasm” comes from the Greek and means “God within”. And what is God within is but a sense of love---proper love of self(self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.

If we can’t do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that had troubled her for at least 30years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “ I am tempted to call Layton as a genius.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-been”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses---finding pleasure in the backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the charming beauty of a rainbow.

Being lonely in the crowd might seem ridiculous. But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems — worrying about life's pressured — can even lead to self-murder.

An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blaming of the post-80s generation. According to a high-level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly “spoiled (溺爱的) and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express 'thank-you'.” Well, how do you like that! First, I don't think China's youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of the money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.

Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern societies. We sense a lack of close friends who can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It's easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?

Surely, with Internet social networking sites such as Kaixin, we have more friends than ever. A new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. Kaixin or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.

And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are starting to catch on in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real and interactive experience.

Plenty of friends, but I’m still lonely

Certainly dustmen prefer to be known as “Refuse Collection and Disposal Officers”. You may think that this is rather silly, and that it is better to call a spade. But dustmen can be just as sensitive as people of any other occupations, though we must admit that their job is not the most romantic one in the world. We often take dustmen for granted. Perhaps because they usually come very early in the morning, before most people are up, we are inclined to forget that they exist. Our dustbins are emptied regularly, but we rarely stop to think about the men who do this. However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen________, the general public soon becomes aware that something is wrong.

Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages. During the first few days it was regarded as a joke. For some reason, jokes have always been made about dustmen, and some people thought this strike was very amusing. But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so funny any more. As the strike continued, people could not bear the accumulation of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to get rid of it. Even when the strike was over, and the wages dispute had been settled, it took several weeks for the country to get cleaned up completely, as so much rubbish had accumulated. Perhaps now the English people appreciate the work of their dustmen rather more highly, and won’t take them for granted any more.
