    Well—done on an Exam

        Do not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination．The closer you are to the exam，the more chance you have of storing and attaining key information．But do not overdo it．  1  An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period，so in the days leading tip to your first exam，get into the habit of being up and ready to work．It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it．

    On the day of the exam，have a good breakfast，pack everything you need（pens，pencils，erasers，etc），then make your way to the examination hall in good time．  2   

    Once in your seat，simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts．Close your eyes and take in a few slow，deep breaths to help you relax．When you turn over the test paper，spend a short period reading through all t he instructions and questions，paying particular attention to key verbs such as“discuss”，“compare”and“evaluate”．  3  It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers．Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle，begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest．It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered quest ion down on paper．Also remember to write clearly，and do not be afraid to express the unexpected：after all，examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical（模式化的）answers．

    　　In 1993, New York State ordered stores to pay money for those who returned beverage(饮料)containers．Within a year, consumers(people who buy goods)had returned millions of aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles．Plenty of companies were eager to accept the aluminum and glass as raw materials for new products, but because few could figure out what to do with the plastic, much of it wound up buried in landfills(垃圾填埋场)．The problem was not limited to New York．Unfortunately, there were too few uses for second-hand plastic．

    　　Today, one out of five plastic soda bottles is recycled in the United States．The reason for the change is that now there are dozens of companies across the country buying throw-away plastic soda bottles and turning them into fence posts, paint brushes, etc．

    　　As the New York experience shows, recycling includes more than simply separating valuable materials from the rest of the rubbish．A thrown-away thing remains a thrown-away thing until somebody figures out how to give it a second life－and until economic arrangements exist to give that second life value．Without enough markets to take in materials collected for recycling, throw always actually reduce prices for used materials．

    　　Making landfill space become smaller and rising costs for burying and burning rubbish are forcing local governments to look more closely at recycling．In many areas, the East Coast especially, recycling is already the least expensive waste management choice．For every ton of waste recycled, a city avoids paying for its disposal(action of getting rid of sth．), which, in parts of New York, amounts to savings of more than ＄100 per ton．Recycling also forces the local economy to develop quickly by providing jobs and reduces the pollution control and energy costs of industries that make recycled products by giving them a more refined(纯净的)material．

    　　It is hard to predict how science is going to turn out, and if it is really good science, it is impossible to predict．If the things to be found are actually new, they must be unknown in advance．You cannot make choices on this matter．You either have science or you don't and if you have it you have to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and useful bits．

    　　The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we don't know enough about nature．Indeed, I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology．It is, in its way, a clear piece of news．It would have amazed the brightest minds of the 18th century to be told by any of us how little we know and how strange seems the way ahead．In earlier times, they either pretended to understand how things worked or simply made up stones to give answers．Now that we have begun exploring seriously, we are catching sight of how huge the questions are, and how far from being answered．Because of this, we are sorry．It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant; the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not-so-bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted．

    　　But we are making a beginning, and there ought to be some satisfaction．There are probably no questions we can think up that can't be answered, sooner or later．Within our limits, we should be able to work our way through to all our answers, if we keep at it long enough, and pay attention．
