    Early last season, I wrote a column about an art of kindness I had seen Jordan do to a disabled child outside the stadium．After it ran，I got a call from a marl in the western suburbs．He said，“I read what you wrote about Jordan．but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw．”

Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and people call you up to say that the person is not so nice.

    A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought up what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty .neighborhood?

    "Not two boys," Jordan said. "But four."

    And he named them. He said four names. And what did they talk about?

    "Everything,” Jordan said. " Anything. I’ve asked to see their grades so that I can check to see if they're paying attention to their study. If it turns out that one or two of them may need teaching, I make sure they get it."

    It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life one more thing that no one knows about, and one more thing Jordan does fight for. The NBA season is over now, and those boys have their memories. So do J! When the expert reviewers begin to tuna against Jordan as they surely will, I'll think about those boys under the streetlight, waiting for the man they know to come. Some people seem to pick up new vocabularies, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.

It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. As the College Entrance Examination is drawing nearby, some students would rather expect

good luck than to make every effort to study．They think success results good luck．Whether they can be admitted to key universities depend on luck．However, others insist that diligence is a mother of success．Only by working hard can they achieve what they want．Since they fail sometimes, they don’t give up, for they believe that success lies in our own hands．As for me, I’m in favor of the latter opinion．Luck doesn’t come alone．It goes hand by hand with hard working．Sometimes, some students are lucky enough to succeed, but such luck won’t last long because it is not basing on their own abilities．

Now we know there are no new Earth to explore and exploit; one image to illustrate this is to think of Earth as a spaceship, where most materials have to be recycled. For us, “moving on” will be a case of leaving behind the throwaway society and advancing to a conserver society.

To qualify as citizens of a conserver society, we must change traditional attitudes and thinking. We need to recognize that there is not very often such a thing as “waste”, rather, there are materials which sometimes end up in the wrong place. The change has already begun. The European steel industry reuses scrap（废弃的）metal, resulting in an energy saving of up to 50% . Recycling a glass container saves only 18%; but, in parts of the United States, a citizen buying a bottle of soda or beer now pays a deposit against return of the empty bottle.

If all drink containers in the USA were to be reused, the annual saving would be 0.5 million tons glass, plus about 50 million barrels of oil used in production processes. In Japan, OPEC promoted an increase in recycling of raw materials from 16% to 48% in just five years. In Norway, the price of a new car includes a disposal cost element of about 100 dollars, redeemable（可换成现款的）when the junked car is turned in at an approved receiving center.

Major new businesses are trying to exploit waste chemicals and oil. The Chinese claim to reuse 2.5 million tons of scrap iron and at least one million tons of waste paper each year. In the main, the conserver society depends on the commitment of individuals. But they can be encouraged by government incentive(鼓励) and punishment, which should apply at least as strongly to industry and other commercial interests.

The 92-year-old, thin, calm and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, even though she is nearly blind, moved to a nursing home today.
