题目列表(包括答案和解析)
Here is how to leave the supermarket with the things you wanted to buy and nothing more.
Suggestion 1: Pick up a basket. You’ll head straight for the checkout (收款台) when it starts to get heavy. Don’t use the trolleys (购物车) because they will make you put in extra things. |
Suggestion 2: Make a list and stick to(坚持) it. Supermarkets usually place things we use every day far away, such as bread and milk. So you have to walk along the aisles (过道) in between, buying things you don’t really need on the way. |
Suggestion 3: Keep away from BOGOFs (Buy One Get One Free offers). Just how many watermelons can you eat in a week? Fruit and vegetables usually work out cheaper. |
Suggestion 4: Look up and down. The most expensive things are placed in the middle. For cheaper things, check the higher and the lower places. |

Recently some houses in our community have been broken into. I would like to give you some suggestions about how to prevent from stealing (盗窃).
First, let’s talk about lighting. We should turn on the outside lights at night. Inside the house, it’s a good idea to put automatic timers (自动定时器) on lights. When you are out, it will still look like someone is at home. If you live in an apartment building, make sure that there’s good lighting in the garage and in the hallways.
Next, let’s talk about locks. First of all, cheap locks are not safe. You should buy special locks to lock your doors and windows. 83 Remember to lock your doors and windows, even when you leave for just a minute. Did you know that half of the thieves break in through unlocked doors and windows?
My next suggestion is not to keep lots of money in the house. It’s wise to put your money in a bank. You should put marks on your other valuables, like television, stereos and cameras, so that the police can return them to you if they are found.
84Believe it or not, if you follow all of these suggestions above, your house will be safer.

The time may be 10 a.m.in Beijing and 2 a.m.in New York.It is set on the same time—Greenwich Mean Time. This is because in l884, many nations met to decide how to prevent the confusion(混乱)made by almost every town having its own time.
Such a time rule was devised(设计)by Sir Sanford Fleming(1827-1915).He was an engineer who lived in Canada. He held a meeting in 1884 to discuss the time problem. He suggested that there should be 24 meridians(子午线)dividing the world into 24 time zones(时区).The zero meridian would pass through the village of Greenwich near London. The time at Greenwich would be called Greenwich Mean Time, and at each of the 24 meridian lines, the time would go forward or backwards by one hour.
Twenty-seven nations agreed to this suggestion, and since then GMT has been the centre of time-keeping for all nations. Most nations have only one time zone, however, large nations such as the USA and Australia are divided into several time zones.
1.What time is it in New York when it is 10 a.m.in Beijing?
2.Who devised Greenwich Mean Time?
3.When was the meeting held to discuss the time problem?
