Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Yao Ming-people across the world know these Chinese faces. This year, Jeremy Lin has added himself to the line-up.The 23-year-old is the first Asian-American NBA player since the 1940s-his parents are from Taiwan. In early 2012, Lin was still sitting on the bench after two teams didn't hire him one after another. He lived with his brother in a small flat, worrying that the New York Knicks would cut him, too.

But suddenly, the once-nameless young man became a basketball hero.As of February 16, this year he has led his team to seven straight victories(胜利), including a win over the Los Angeles Lakers in which he scored 38 points, and Kobe Bryant scored 34.In the game against the Toronto Raptors, he made a 3-pointer in the final half-second.

He's scored 166 points in seven games, including 109 in his first four starts - that's more than any player ever.

Kobe Bryant was surprised after playing with Lin, though he knew very little about the Knicks' newest star before that.

“Players don't usually come out of nowhere,” Bryant said.“If you can go back and take a look, his skill level was probably there from the beginning. But no one ever noticed.I am sure he has put in a lot of work to always have that belief in himself. Now, he has the opportunity to show it.”

Lin himself also said that, “there is more opportunity [with the Knicks].” The Knicks have been in need of a good point guard, and Lin is “a perfect fit”.

One afternoon many years ago, I sat down on a chair in a park and watched a little boy, around 2 years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy would fall to the grass, get up, and without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could as if nothing had happened.

When kids fall down, they don't think of the fall as a failure.Instead, they consider it as a learning experience. They try and try again until they succeed.

While I was touched by the boy's strong mind, I was also touched by the way he ran. With each attempt, he looked so confident and natural. He only wanted to run freely and to do it as well as he could. He was just being a child-just being himself-being completely in the moment. He never gave up.Each time he fell, he got himself back up again, as if he knew that falling down was simply a part of life.

Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判)and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don't care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn't seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.

Grown-ups can hardly find children's games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.

It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.

(1)What is true about children when they play games?

[ ]

AThey can stop playing any time they like.

BThey can test their personal abilities.

CThey want to pick a better team.

DThey don't need rules.

(2)To become a leader in a game the child has to ________.

[ ]

Aplay well

Bwait for his turn

Cbe confident in himself

Dbe popular among his playmates

(3)What do we know about grown-ups?

[ ]

AThey are not interested in games.

BThey find children's games too easy.

CThey don't need a reason to play games.

DThey don't understand children's games.

(4)Why does a child like playing games?

[ ]

ABecause he can be someone other than himself.

BBecause he can become popular among friends.

CBecause he finds he is always lucky in games.

DBecause he likes the place where he plays a game.

(5)The writer believes that ________.

[ ]

Achildren should make better rules for their games.

Bchildren should invite grown-ups to play with them.

Dchildren play games without reasons
