Jane,

After I left Paris I spent two days in New York City and one day in Washington DC. I got to Miami, Florida on Nov. 13. The weather is wonderful here. This morning I went swimming and then slept on the beach. When I woke up, I found Jennifer Lopez—my favorite movie star!  She was just on my right!  I asked her to take a picture with me. You know, that was my dream. She agreed!  I'm going to show you the picture.

                                                                                    Yours,

John

Dear Dad,

I got here after 18 hours on a train at last!  It's very cold here in Moscow. It's white everywhere. This afternoon I went to have a look at the city. I got lost. I was glad I took Russian lessons in my university. They helped me a lot. A young girl showed me the way back to my hotel. I think I can finish my work here and go back home soon. I'm longing for the warm sunshine at home. See you soon.

                                                                     Max

Dear Amy,

I arrived in Guilin yesterday. What a beautiful place!  The people are kind here and I have some new friends. Guess who I met here!  Tom, my high school classmate. How small the world is!  He is working here as an English teacher at a middle school. He showed me around the city. I also went to his school. I bought a special bag made in Guilin for you and a silk tablecloth for Mom. Tomorrow evening I'm going to fly to Beijing.

Mafia

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.

Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran(经营) Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original(原先的) Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing.

In 1983, Schultz travelled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the coffee bars there caught his eye. To Schultz it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.

Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores—and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!

Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets an understanding of customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right locations for their customers.

阅读下面短文,判断正误。(10分)

What a cold winter! How wonderful it would be if there were a fire! Fire keeps us warm. But fire is very dangerous, and can kill us. November 9 is National Fire Safety Day. It's a time for us to learn a lot more about fire, especially what to do if we are caught in a fire.

Call 119

Never try to put out a fire by yourself, even if it is a very small one. Get help from your parents or call 119. Tell 119 where you are and what is on fire. Listen to 119's instructions.

Keep down close to the floor

If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there, so it's easier to breathe(呼吸) and see where you are going. If you don't, the smoke may kill you before the fire does.

Don't use the elevator

Never use the elevator(电梯) during a fire. Always use the stairs. An elevator may stop at the floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.

Don't go back

Never go back into a burning building. Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it. Don't worry about your pets. Animals have a very good sense of smell(嗅觉). They often get out of the building before people.
