Snack time is a part of the day for children of all ages. But new research suggests that kids snacking in big groups could be at risk for obesity.

Scientists from American University looked at the eating behavior of 54 kids between the ages of 2 and 6. At snack time, the scientist watched the amount of food each child ate while they were in groups of either three or nine. According to the study, the more children there are in a group, the more likely they are to eat more. Those in the larger group ate nearly 30 percent more than those in the smaller group, and they actually ate faster.

Since this is the first such study in children, scientists are quick to point out the importance of encouraging healthy habits in kids as early as possible.

“If you know kids eat more in large groups, it seems perfect to use this information to keep snack groups small or use small tables,” says Dr. Jana Klauer, an expert in New York.

Smaller groups would allow for a quiet and more relaxing environment-a perfect chance to teach children about food, manners and how to know when they feel full. “This would have an effect on kids' eating,” adds Klauer. “They would slow down and eat less.”

1.How many times have the scientists done such study according to the passage?

A.Once

B.Twice

C.Three times

D.Many times

2.The underlined word means”      ”in Chinese.

A.Because children in smaller groups eat faster.

A small ,white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas.Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts—running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…,spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.
Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤)at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.
Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot potential (潜力) , but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids—all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.

There have been many important developments in medicine. The following are two developments that have been very important in saving lives.

Imagine having an operation and being wide awake. This won’t happen, thanks to something called anesthetic.Anesthetics are given to people during operations so that they fall asleep.Anesthetics cause the muscles to relax and the body to become numb(lose all feeling)so that no pain is felt. This helps the doctors to operate more easily.Anesthetics may be taken in different ways:

●Breathing in a gas

●An injection straight into the bloodstream

●Swallowing a tablet

A local anesthetic numbs only the area where the doctor needs to work.A general anesthetic is when a Patient is put into sleep while the doctor operates Anesthetics were first given in 1844.

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in the world today Luckily, something can be done about it.Someone who has an unhealthy heart can have a heart transport operation.A heart transplant is when the damaged heart of a patient is taken out and a healthy heart is put in.It is said, though, that the healthy heart has to come from someone who has died Doctor Barard from South Africa was the first person to do a heart transplant operation in 1967.Many successful transplants have been done since then.
