With the Double Ninth Festival(重阳节) coming on October 2 and Halloween(万圣节) on October 31, many people are asking this question: Should Chinese kids celebrate Western festivals? I think the answer is Yes, Yes and Yes!
It is not how important each festival is, because every festival is about having a good time. Anybody can do that! Festivals are a great chance to learn about other cultures — and in a fun way.
Halloween is one of my favorites. When I was younger, we would go “trick- or-treating” on Halloween night. All the kids would dress up and go door- to-door shouting “trick or treat!” At each house, we’d get candies and chocolate. Things haven’t changed much for me. This Halloween I’ll be going to a party where everyone will dress up. I’m lazy, so I’ll just throw a white sheet over my head, cut out two holes for eyes and call myself a ghost(幽灵).
I hope that there are lots of Chinese people — young and old — having Halloween parties of their own this year. It’s a good way to bring people together. In fact, not only should Chinese kids celebrate Western holidays, but Western kids should start celebrating Chinese holidays. It would be great for me to go back to Canada and see all the children giving each other moon cakes on the Mid-autumn Festival or lighting fireworks (烟花) on the Chinese New Year.
So, join the fun and have a happy Halloween and a great Double Ninth Festival!

Koalas are looking like toys. It’s hard to find another animal that is so beloved internationally. But love alone is not enough for the koala’s future.
When not asleep a koala feeds on eucalyptus(桉树) leaves, especially at night. Koalas do not drink much water and they get most of their water from these leaves. The eucalyptus forests(丛林) that have been home to koalas are being increasingly cleared for housing, farms and roads. And according to Deborah Tabart, the director of the Australian Koala Foundation(基金会), each tree lost just adds difficulty to these animals’ lives. Well, this is exactly the koala habitat that used to be all over Australia. And in the last two hundred years since we’ve been here, we’ve cleared about 80% of this. So the foundation is pushing for a National Koala Act, a law to protect the remaining forests.
According to a 1996 study done for the foundation, the koalas are a big money maker, making around three quarters of a billion U.S. dollars every year for Australia. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane connects koala protection and tourism with the joy of visitors.
The foundation says a large number of koalas have been killed over the past two centuries and that the population has been becoming smaller and smaller: from about ten million to possibly fewer than 100,000, which is why the foundation has decided to make the National Koala Act come true.
59. How many koalas are there in Australia now?
A. About 10 million. B. About 1 million.
C. About 100,000. D. About 10,000.
60. How are koalas described?
A. They are always asleep. B. They are loved so much.
C. They look very strange. D. They eat all kinds of forests.
61. Why are the forests cleared?
A. Because more and more roads and houses are built.
B. Because more and more people move to these areas.
C. Because the koala population is growing rapidly.
D. Because Koalas cannot be moved to zoos.
62. What influence would the National Koala Act have?
A. No more eucalyptus trees would be cut down.
B. Land owners would plant eucalyptus trees on their farms.
C. The clearing of forests would be controlled.
D. Australians would have a good future.
