For some reason we were reminded that we primates(灵长目) need love. Kim Bard of the University of Portsmouth in England and her colleagues carried out a study on 46 baby chimpanzees orphans(黑猩猩孤儿), which had lost their mothers. The study showed that primate babies that have tight relationships with mother figures do much better on cognitive (认知的 ) tests than babies who only grew up with peers (同伴), but this is not breaking news. In fact, it ' s old news.

In the 1950s, Harry Harlow did a series of experiments with baby monkeys that showed. that lack of love and comfort makes for a crazy monkey.

Harlow constructed a cage that included a wire monkey "mother" with a plastic face. Then he equipped the "mother" with a milk bottle .The cage also had another wire "mother" who was covered with soft cloth. The baby monkeys spent all their time with the cloth "mother" arid only went to the wire "mother" to feed.

Harlow's monkey experiment was important because, at the time, child care experts, and everybody's grandmother had a "no touch, no comfort" policy toward children. They advised parents not to respond to crying babies. They thought that babies should sleep alone to become independent, and for God's sake put that kid down.

But Harlow's work changed that policy. Mothers were soon permitted to have their babies next to them in the hospital.

The current chimp research based on Harlow's work shows that mother's love doesn't just make for a psychologically(糖神上地) healthy child, it also makes for a smart child.

The highly raised chimps do better than those that are not loved, and the well-raised chimps do even better than human kids on IQ tests.

We are primates, social animals which need love. We need to be held and talked to and made to feel that at least one person wants to be with us all the time.

29. The study Kim Bard and his colleagues did

 A. included 46 baby and mother monkeys

B. is nothing new to people about the findings

C. showed that many chimpanzees lack of love when they were young

D. showed many chimpanzees had good relationship with their mothers

30. Harlow built two "mothers" for baby,.monkeys to _______

A. make them live comfortably B. let them have more choices

C. give them more love D make comparison well

31. Which of the following can we infer from the passage?

A. Well--raised chimps are better than people in IQ.

B. Sometimes it's not wrong to have no touch and no comfort to babies.

C. Chimps growing up in cages are less smarter than chimps growing up in wild.

D. Babies who sleep with mothers tend to be cleverer than babies sleep alone.

32. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Love makes kids smarter B. Primates need love

C. No touch, no comfort D. How to develop cognitive abilities

Amsterdam is a city like Venice founded on and around water or waterways. However, unlike Venice, Holland's largest city isn't only a museum. Amsterdam is a real, living and large city.

The Dutch capital has clearly come a long way since it was founded. A story goes that two fishermen and a seasick dog first came there. The dog jumped ship to pour out the con- tents of his stomach and the two fishermen became the founders of Amsterdam. The reality of its founding might have something to do with the River Amstel which was built in the 13th century. Settlement developed slowly there and it took its name.

Amsterdam is built on numberless canals, which neatly divide the city into easily navigable(可航行的) districts. There seems to be a canal around every corner in Amsterdam. This is not too surprising when you consider that the city is home to 165 canals, which are more than Venice.

During the summer, people come together in Vondel park, where locals and tourists alike relax in the. fine weather. Amsterdam might be one of Europe's wettest capitals, but as soon as the clouds are clear and the sun shines, its citizens go out into the streets to sit in cafes, go boating on a canal, or even ride bicycles; the number of bikes in the city is more than double that of the city's population.

Amsterdam's winters tend to be cold with plenty of rain, but this seldom seems to stop the tourists from gathering together in the city. Particularly cold winters also offer a good chance for visitors to watch the local people skating across the frozen canals. These days, with plenty of rail, bus and air connections to all over Europe, the Dutch capital is a year-round tourist destination as well as one of the world's key business centers.

25. We can conclude from the passage that Amsterdam is

A. as big as Venice B. similar to Venice in certain aspects

C. the largest city in Europe D. a big inland city

26. What can we learn about Amsterdam from Paragraph 2?

A. The city has a short history.

B. The two fishermen gave the city the name.

C. The city got its name from the River Amstel.

D. The city was named after the seasick dog.

27. In winter the tourists in Amsterdam may be advised to ______.

 A. relax in Vondel park B. go boating on canals

 C. drink in cafes D. watch people skating

28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

 A. Amsterdam and Venice have a similar number of canals.

 B. On average each person in Amsterdam has more than two bicycles.

 C. It seldom rains in Amsterdam in winter because it is very cold.

 D. Tourists can go to Amsterdam only by ship now.

Thunder was coming when Reginald Eppes woke up at five in the morning. He checked the weather forecast. A violent storm was coming ,but it sounded like his small town wouldn't be hit too hard. But Eppes, a firefighter, had clearly known the power of these huge storms from experiences. "Do you know where the flashlights (手电) are?" he asked his wife. Danielle. Just then, thunder was all-around them. The moment he turned the flashlight on. The house lights went off. A second later, the kitchen windows were broken. Eppes and Danielle ran to their boys who were still sleeping in their bedroom.

"Get up, get up, R.J.! " Eppes shouted, waving his flashlight. The sleepy boy moved to the edge of the bed. Eppes held out his arms and ordered his son to jump. He was too late. The roof was torn down. R.J. was buried ,under the pieces.

"I've lost him," Eppes thought. Quickly, he hurried to Joel to shield him. Glass, wood, and plaster (灰泥 ) hit them. Then something huge, heavy-maybe the washing machine-knocked into him. He hurt his arms, but he still held the flashlight in one hand.

After a long period, the wind began to die down. Eppes found himself standing in the ruins of his home. Darkness lay all about him. Then he thought he saw a shape moving straight toward him. It was R.J., guided home by the light of his father's flashlight.

At the hospital later, R.J. described what had happened to him. "I rushed out when the wall started moving I was scared. My mom and dad were gone. Pieces of glass hit my back, and something hit my neck really hard. "

R.J. had been raised up into the air by the wind and dropped back to the ground. Amazingly, R.J. was not hurt badly. Of all his family, Eppes was hurt most seriously.

It was a cold day, but the students from Prosser Middle School in Chicago were sorting through the waste when they found that their school produces 1,500 pounds every day.

fFood tray

Prosser is just one school that throws out nearly 4,000 meal trays every day. Counting all of Chicago’s public schools, the number comes to nearly a quarter of a million a day. That’s more than 1 million a week and about 5 million a month.

“None of the trays are being recycled,” said a teacher. “ Everyone agrees that it’s very bad.”

Luckily, concerns about the environment and health have made some US cities take action. Dozens of schools have begun programs to reduce the use of food trays in school.

These schools have also banned (禁止)some fast food, including McDonald’s. Instead, they offer students recyclable trays. They encourage students to sort out lunchroom waste, then wash and recycle milk cartons and trays . So far, the program has helped schools to save a total of 820,000 trays each week.

Jay Stream Middle School in Illinois teaches its students how to collect trays. The school has cut its lunchroom waste by two thirds now that students recycle their used trays instead of breaking them.

Prosser Middle School also sees the benefits of the program. Students have organized about 20 clubs and volunteer activities to cut down on cafeteria garbage. They now recycle 80 percent of the school waste. “ I joined the club,” said Erika Santana, a 16-year-old junior in Prosser, “because I want to make Earth a better place.”

56.Did Prosser Middle School create much garbage every day before the program ?

57.How many meal trays do public schools in Chicago throw out a day?

58.What does Jay Stream Middle School teach its students to do?

59.Who joined the club?

60.What’s the passage about ?

Many people would like to watch sport matches. First, you need to know about audience manners.

Most sporting arenas(竞技场)have rules for audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you have, remember to take away your soft drink bottles and other rubbish.

During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience.

Clapping is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, clap warmly. If someone fails, your clapping will help encourage them.

Clapping is not welcome, however, while players need to keep their attention. Various sports have various rules for the audience.

Enjoying artistic gymnastics silence. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. When you watch snooker and table tennis matches, flash photography is not allowed. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centers.

To be a good audience, you should take time to learn the game—particular rules and related culture of each event.

How should one invest a sum of money in these clays of inflation (通货膨胀)? Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate. Only a brave man, or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market. Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings, and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques.

I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life. "The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands. Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people's wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves(奴隶)."

Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain men were very clever at measuring(量) the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout tire time. So it seems that the first clocks were human beings.

However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable(可靠的) ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks. Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.

Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in air antique clock and perhaps make a future profit(收益)?

51. According to the passage, collecting antique clocks____.

A.can hardly keep the value of your savings

B. will cost much of your savings

C. may increase your wealth

D. needs your bravery

52. By quoting (引用) the remark of a being from another planet, the author intends to____.

A. suggest human beings are controlled by a clock

B. describe why clocks can rule the planet Earth

C. tell readers what clocks look like

D. compare chocks to human beings

53. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to measure the time?

A. Counting the beating of one's own heart.

B. Making use of candles, sand and water.

C. Observing shadows cast by the sun.

D. Keeping slaves busy day and night.

54. The underlined phrase stately homes in paragraph(段落)4 means_________.

A. state-owned houses

B. houses in very good condition

C. grand houses open to the public

D. houses where statesmen meet regularly

55. The purpose of the passage is________.

A. to introduce the culture of antique clocks

B. to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks

C. to compare different ways to make a future profit

D. to explain convenient and reliable ways of telling time
