Hippies (嬉皮士) were part of a youth movement, made up of young adults between the ages of 15 and 25. These youngsters or hippies criticized middle class values. Hippies were in favor of peace, love, and personal freedom over political and social systems. The hippies fashion was popular with the youth across the United States in the 1960s. The hippies designed a whole new lifestyle of their own.

They wore bell-bottom jeans, and T-shirts were part of everyday wear. Women wore long skirts and dresses. Artificial flowers and real flowers were worn in the hair.

During the hippies movement, men and women grew their hair long, contrary to popular belief. Usually hair was parted in the middle. During this time period, long sideburns (鬓角) were the thing for men. Fashion accessories (饰品) for women during the time also included bandanas and other headgear, scarves. Hippies decorated their hair with flowers or little hair clips or a colorful headband across their forehead. The long easy flowing hair tied back a thin ribbon became popular throughout the 1960s.

Women’s jewelry was mostly influenced by Native American or any similar handmade designs. Sporting any necklace with beads was hugely popular. Jewelry that made music was highly desirable since music was a basic part of the hippies scene. Necklaces and jangly ankle bracelets were popular among women. In general, the ankles received a lot of attention, especially amongst those living on the warm west coast, because many hippies preferred to go barefoot (赤脚的).

Hippies fought back the ugliness of the Second World War and turned the attention of fashion towards natural beauty as much as possible. The youth movement affected the teen fashion industry in a major way. The hippies fashion keeps changing with time, but women who found their own individuality and style in the 1960s have never let it go and passed much of their own hippies influence on to their daughters.

Paul Larsen’s Vestas Sailrocket 2 is half boat, half plane, and hopefully it will soon be the fastest sailing boat on water too. “Everything above the water is an aeroplane and everything below the water behaves just like a boat,” says Larsen, a professional sailor who’s now turned his attention to breaking the speed sailing record, describing it as his lifetime mission (使命). “A large part of this boat is flying,” says Larsen. “When it’s going at high speed, it’s like a well-built paper airplane.”

The record is open to any craft (飞行器), as long as it’s using wind and water, and there is at least one person on board. At present, it is held by American kite surfer Rob Douglas, who reached 55.65 knots (about 103 kilometres per hour) over the required 500 meter course in 2010.

The craft may be using the latest technology, but its concept (理念) is based on a craft that was written about nearly five decades ago. American rocket scientist Bernard Smith wrote about a sailboat in 1963 that he believed could reach 40 knots — a concept that was well ahead of his time. Larsen’s team tracked down Smith in 2007 to tell the then 97-year-old that they had broken the 40 knots, using the ideas Smith came up with 44 years earlier. Based on that design, they have since been able to go 50 knots and are pushing to go even faster.

“It is dangerous,” Larsen admits. “You go out there and you don’t realize the consequences if the smallest thing goes wrong.” The worst crashes are the ones when the boat dives directly into the water. “That’s a killer. At least in the air you slow down.” Although there is some danger, Larsen and his team won’t stop until they hit the 60 knot mark and take with it the world speed sailing record.

South Africa has a long history of producing top golfers. South Africa Golf Association President Colin Burger offers a reason. “We can play 12 months of the year, which is obviously an advantage for us, so we can actually groom our juniors up until the seniors, and we can play a lot of tournaments all over the country in good weather conditions,” said Burger.

South Africa also has programs to spot and develop young talent, regardless of social background. The South Africa Golf Development Board offers programs across the country to teach children to play golf. Every day after school, they can come for free to perfect their swing (挥棒) with a coach.

When the children are good enough, they can practice at a regular golf course, and the best get to play in tournaments around the country. For the South Africa Golf Development Board, golf is more than a sport. Regional manager Andy Ostle said, “The game of golf is very similar to life itself. It teaches them etiquette (礼仪); it teaches them values; it teaches them honesty. And the most important thing is that it takes them off the streets. They’re doing something worthwhile that they can actually pursue (追求) once they become an adult.”

And there are benefits for those young players who do not become professionals. “To play golf, they also have to go to school. They have to pass their exams, and if they pass their exams, then there is a much better possibility to get a job, especially in the golfing industry,” said Ostle.
