Empty lands in cities and towns around the United States are finding new life as urban farms.
Eco City Farms in Edmonston, Maryland, is located near shopping centers, car repair shops and homes. The neighborhood is a working-class community where people do not have very much money, and they have limited access to fresh food in markets.
Over the past two years, the farm has attracted lots of volunteers from the community like Mary Clark. She schools her four children at home. On a recent day she brought them to Eco City Farms for a lesson.
Mary Clark says, “It’s important that the children understand the connection between the food that they eat and the soil, the air and the pollution.” What did Hannah, Caleb, John and Alston think of the experience?
Hannah Clark, “You know, it’s good for the earth and it’s good for us.”
Caleb Clark, “It may not be like fun, but it’s fun, because you’re learning and not like writing something out on a piece of paper.”
John Clark, “Basically instead of feeling down when I have to eat vegetables, I feel happy.”
Alston Clark, “I like coming out here. You know, you connect with the earth, where your food comes from. You appreciate the food a little bit more.”
Margaret Morgan-Hubbard started Eco City Farms. She thinks of it as a place where people can learn to live healthier lives. She says, “Our view is that what happens in a community influences the culture of that community. So our idea was growing food in a community and showing that you can have farms even in urban areas.”

A
For the last two and a half years I have been giving out smile cards whenever I find an opportunity.
I am sad to admit that my family and I are homeless, living in a trailer (拖车) which was so kindly given by a family member. During this period, I have given out over 200 smile cards. I have always tried to find something kind to do, even when my husband lost his job and we were fighting to get by.
I have started giving out coupons (赠票) for free food and money for people to get at least one meal. I always put my coupon, gift and smile card in an envelope that says “For whoever finds this”.
Once I left an envelope on someone’s work truck and got back into our trailer. I just happened to look out at the truck later and I saw the guy open my envelope and find the gift. He read the card and then he looked around to see who had done this. I just smiled to myself, without being found out. I always leave my gifts where people can find them, but never see me do it — I like it to be anonymous.
Today I saw a car on the side of the highway with the hazard lights (危险信号灯) on. Further up the road, I saw a young couple walking beside the highway. I pulled over and asked them if they needed a ride to the next exit; after a second the guy said they could really use the ride. They said “thank you” when I dropped them off at the exit. I try to help others when I can, and sometimes no smile card is needed or given.
It’s my little “game of good” and I really enjoy doing it and I hope to keep doing it!
