在英语中，尤其是在口语中，为了避免重复，常常会省略句子中的一个或几个成分，但仍能表达其完整的意义。较为常见的几种省略现象有：

(1)依赖上下文的省略。这种省略在对话中最为常用，被省略的部分一般可以根据上下文在句子中补上。如考例中就是省略了taken　an　umbrella。

(2)使用替代词的省略。在省略句子某些成分时，有时还必须加上适当的替代词，如do,　so,　not等，以保持句子意思的完整。

(3)在一些状语从句中，如果谓语动词是be，主语又和主句的主语一致，或者主语是it，常常可以把从句中的主语和be省略掉。如：

If　necessary,　get　in　touch　with　the　people　who　have　valuable　information　or　conduct　a　survey.
