TUVALU(图瓦卢), a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will

be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level, Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. ______71_____

___72__. Venice(威尼斯), a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years.Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050.A century ago, St.Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year, Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川)melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years.

___73__.Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2.This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes.___74____

____75____, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to live.

     A. The main cause of global warming is human pollution

     B. Should this come true

     C. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered.

     D. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea

               D

The ability to make 'small talk' is of great importance. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures -- and rightly so! Small talk gets friendships started and 'breaks the ice' before important business meetings and other events.

However, making small talk is not difficult only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. And small talk can be especially difficult for some learners because making small talk means talking about almost anything -- and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics. Most English learners have excellent vocabulary in specific areas, but may have difficulties discussing topics they are unfamiliar with because of a lack of appropriate(恰当的)vocabulary.

This lack of vocabulary leads to some students 'blocking'. They slow down or stop speaking completely because of a lack of self-confidence.

67.The first paragraph is to ______.

A. show people the importance of small talk

B. say knowledge is not important

C. show that ice cannot be broken up without small talk

D. start friendships and break the ice

68.Which of the following is the right statement according to the passage?

A. Small talk is important because making small talk is no easy job.

B. Many English learners can have excellent small talk.

C. Most native speakers of English find it too difficult to conduct small talk.

D.A lack of appropriate vocabulary might make small talk a failure.

69. Many native speakers of English feel it difficult to make small talk because ______.

A. they are not familiar with some specific area or topic

B. they don’t have self-confidence before English learners

C. their vocabulary is not for small talk but for a specific area

D. they are only familiar with some specific area or topic

70..Many English students are more interested in effective small talk than grammar structures because ______.

A. small talk is more difficult than grammar structures

B. it is helpful for their future work

C. they have to make friends

D. they need them to kill the time before conferences

              C

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it?

Many people are afraid to solve the problem themselves. Dr. Robert Albert, author of Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back, thinks it’s because their self-respect is low. “There is always a ‘superior’ around –a parent, a teacher, a boss—who ‘knows better’”.

But Albert and other scientists are doing something to help people deal with the trouble. They offer a course called A.T. In the A.T. course, people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to get rid of fear. A group taking an A.T. course will help the shy person to lose his/her fear. But A.T. uses an even stronger motive(动机)--the need to share. The shy person speaks out in the group because he/she wants to tell how he/she feels.

Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-respect. If someone you face is more “important” than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your answers to problems. You can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.

65.The problem the writer talks about is that ______.

A. some people buy things they don’t want

B. some people are afraid to speak up for their rights

C. there are too many superiors

D. some people don’t think enough of themselves

66.What is the probable meaning of the word “superior” in the passage?

A. 陌生人 B. 上级,长辈 C. 熟人 D. 亲属

In their conversation, Americans often try to be quite frank. They like to talk fairly openly about their families, jobs, and feelings. This is their way to express friendliness and honesty. They like to use phrases such as “Tell it like it is”, and “Get right to the point”. They are trying to say that they do not want to hear only what may be polite or pleasant, but rather they want to know the way things really are or seem to be, as well as a person’s real feelings on many matters. Certain kinds of information, however, are shared with only very close friends; do not ask an American about his or her pay, the daily expense(开支), love affairs, or the age of anyone not nearly your own age. Many people do not like to be asked how much they weigh or details about their marriage, especially at social events.
