GREENPEACE estimates about 4,000 tons of e-waste are thrown away, where does it end up? Here are some of them.

Landfills

Poisonous chemicals in electronic products can leak into the soil over time or be released into the atmosphere, affecting local communities and the environment. Many European countries have regulations to prevent electronic waste being dropped in landfills due to(because of ) its hazardous content. However, the practice still continues in many countries.

Incinerating ( 焚烧)

This releases heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury into the air, as well as poisonous ash. Mercury released into the atmosphere can pollute the food chain, particularly fish.

Reuse

This is a good way to increase a product’s lifespan. Many old products are exported to developing countries. Although the benefits of reusing electronics in this way are clear, the practice is causing serious problems. Old products are thrown after only being used for a short period of time. They are thrown away in areas that don’t have hazardous waste disposal facilities.(处理设备)

Recycling

In developed countries, electronics recycling takes place in purpose-built recycling plants under controlled conditions. In many EU states, for example, plastics from e-waste are not recycled to avoid poisonous smoke. In developing countries, however, there are no such controls. Recycling is done by hand in rubbish piles.

Exporting

E-waste is exported by developed countries to developing ones, often against international laws. That’s because labor cost is less expensive in developing countries and the laws are less strict.

Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(安康),according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.

Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers suggested. Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology, per se ;it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social effects in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

59.The best title for this passage would be __________.

    C.How to Use Technology Properly

C.people were too eager to turn the “virtual” communication into reality

D.people had less time for actual communication with their family and friends

C.social effects should be taken into consideration in designing technological applications and services

D.It is needless to consider social effects in designing technological applications and services

A

These days, it seems that almost all of us are too serious. My older daughter often says to me, “Daddy, you’ve got that serious look again.” Even those of us who are committed to non-seriousness are probably too serious. People are frustrated(沮丧的)and uptight(不安的)about virtually everything being five minutes late, seeing someone look at us wrong or say the wrong thing, paying bills waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake-you name it, we all lose perspective over it.

The root of being uptight is our unwillingness to accept life as being different, in any way, from our expectations. Very simply, we want things to be a certain way but they’re not a certain way. Life is simply as it is. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best:“ Our limited perspective ,our hopes and fears become our measure of life, and when circumstances(环境)don’t fit our ideas, they become our difficulties.” We spend our lives warning things, people, and events to be just as we want them to be-and when they’re not, we fight and we suffer.

The first step in recovering from over-seriousness is to admit that you have a problem. You have to want to change, to become more easygoing. You have to see that your own uptightness is largely of your own creation-it’s composed of the way you have set up your life and the way you react to it.

The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration level. Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t, you’re upset and you suffer. On the other hand, when you let go of your expectations, when you accept life as it is, you’re free.

A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expectations. Don’t expect people to be friendly. When they’re not, you won’t be surprised or bothered; if they are, you’ll be delighted. Don’t expect your day to be problem-free. Instead, as problems come up, say to yourself, “Ah, another hurdle(障碍)to overcome.” As you approach your day in this manner you’ll notice how graceful life can be. Rather than fighting against life, you’ll be dancing with it. Pretty soon, with practice, you’ll lighten up your entire life. And when you lighten up, life is a lot more fun.

56.The underlined word “perspective”(Paragraph1) probably means________.

    A.best hope B.proper judgment

    C.wrong guess D.firm belief

57.According to Benjamin Franklin we should________.

    A.be uptight about life

B.leave life simply as it is

C.fight and struggle to make the surroundings fit our ideas

D.accept life as being different from our expectations

58.Which of the following belongs to “over-seriousness”?

    A.To let go.

    B.To hold on.

    C.To get used to life.

D.To try to approach a single day without expectations.
