Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one I would like to 36 with you .

I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph when we realized we were 37 . Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $20 bill. I was so excited because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on 38 seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. 39 , I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I 40 I’d not actually handed my money to the cashier. I has just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.

My conscience opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I was so upset that I 41 to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream for fear that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff, why don’t you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so 42 of my cash now.

For the next two years, whenever I was 43 of the incident, I’d say to myself, “Don’t think about it.”

I’ve learned two things from this 44 . Maybe I was a fool for 45 in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a 46 pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you’ve done, your conscience will catch up with you.

This reflects the saying, “A coward dies a thousand deaths; a hero dies on.” I have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I’d been a 47 and gone back to pay for the pizza, I’d have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.
