Four hundred and three babies are crying loudly. Do you know how to make them quiet in 41 seconds? There is an amazing new product on sale in Japan which does exactly this. It is an LP (a long-playing record) of sounds from inside a mother’s body, which a hospital doctor recorded. In tests with the record she played the LP to 403 crying babies. After 41 seconds not one baby was crying and 161 of them were sleeping.
The record began as an experiment by Professor Hajime Minooka of the Nippon Medical University near Tokyo. He was looking for something natural that helped new-born babies go to sleep. The sound of the mothers’ heart-beat and other body sounds are the things the babies heard inside their mothers. They feel safe and happy when they hear these sounds again. And they go to sleep. Hospitals in Osaka and Tokyo are using the LP. 10, 000 young couples are using it too. Toshiba Music Company who makes and sells the records is very happy. One and a half million couples marry every year in Japan. Many will have babies, so the LP will definitely be a hit!

“WHAT is the right weight for my height?” is one of the most common questions both boys and girls ask. With the summer holidays coming, many teenagers are thinking about how to get fit, in relation to their weight.
Because people have different body types, there is no single weight that is right for everyone. But there is a healthy weight range(范围)for your height. It is called the Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI is a formula that doctors use to see how much body fat a person has, based on his or her weight and height.
BMI = weight (in kilograms) / height2 (in meters). For adults, a BMI between 18.4 and 25 is healthy. For example, if a person is 1.75 meters, his standard weight should be between 56 kg and 76 kg. But things are more complicated for teens and children.
Young people go through a period of fast growth, called puberty (青春期). In this period the body begins making hormones (荷尔蒙) that cause great physical changes, like faster muscle growth and gains in height and weight.
The average person can expect to grow by as much as 25 centimeters during puberty before he or she reaches full adult height. But not everyone grows and develops at the same speed. Girls and boys differ greatly in the way they change as they grow.
This is why BMIs for teens are different according to gender(性别) and age. Doctors use the different percentiles (百分点) on a chart to decide whether teenagers or children are underweight or overweight.
A teen above the 95th percentile is considered overweight because 95 per cent of their age group have a smaller BMI. A teen below the 5th percentile is considered underweight.
Sounds complicated? To say it in an easy way, if you are a 16-year-old girl, your BMI should be between 17 to 24.7, as for boys of the same age, a healthy BMI score is between 17 and 24.

When the six best students from different cities in Guangdong province all together chose universities in Hong Kong; when the very best student of Beijing picked up HK university while giving up the nearby Peking or Tsinghua University; when the highest enrollment(录取) rate of Hong Kong Science and Industry university reached 48:1, it’s the high time to ask where the real education heaven for students in China is.
Years ago, the answer certainly would be Peking or Tsinghua University. But now no one could give the exact reaction without hesitation. The only sure thing is that HK universities have gradually showed an unusual attraction to a great many mainland students.
It’s no doubt to call this HK craze(狂热), which is even out of the expectation of those HK universities themselves.
How can HK universities shake the steady foundations of Peking and Tsinghua and attract so many mainland students?
First, Hong Kong universities offer large-amount scholarship, especially for the top students who can receive the sum scholarship as much as 400,000
Second, most HK universities receive professors and students from all over the world and carry out bilingual(双语) education. This kind of excellent language atmosphere is another attraction for mainland students.
Furthermore, university students in Hong Kong have a better chance to study abroad as exchange students.
The fierce competition brought by HK universities can be a good thing for an entire improvement of education in China.
At least, it reminded the mainland universities the tuition fees(学费) are among students’ top concern when they are choosing universities. It’s time to move.
