Many years ago, there was a story of a school teacher-Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume.

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and maths. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.(医学博士).

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

There are differences between western culture and Chinese culture. How can we tell the differences between western culture and Chinese culture? We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let’s look at the words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog”, “a mad dog”, “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person’s serious illness, they say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very tired. However, the Chinese people love cats very much. But in western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is cruel.

There are many other examples of how “cat” is used differently as well. Black cats may be thought of as either good luck or bad in a situation. In Great Britain, black cats are a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors(未婚者). However in Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of evil omens(征兆), specifically being suspected of being the familiars of witches; other cultures consider them to be bad luck as well. The gambling world is afraid of a black cat: it is believed that if you are on your way to a casino(赌场) and a black cat crosses your road or path, you should not go to the casino and go home; most players believe that black cats bring them bad luck. - cite_note-1 Other black creatures, such as black dogs, have shared in the prejudice(偏见) and suspicion of being "familiars".

The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some western countries. People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.

The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.

China Opens World Expo 2010 in Shanghai

The 2010 World Expo has opened in the city of Shanghai in what China hopes will be further proof of its rising global influence. Almost 250 countries and international organizations are showcasing their culture in an event themed around sustainable development.

World leaders, including France's President Sarkozy, are attending the lavish opening ceremony.

"Expo 2010 Shanghai is now open!" Chinese President Hu Jintao declared during the gala(庆祝) opening, in which 2,300 performers and musicians from all over the world took part.

They were celebrating the Expo slogan: "Better city, better life in music and dance".

Tens of thousands of fireworks and lasers then lit up the city's riverfront-in what organizers promised would be the biggest-ever multimedia event, the BBC's Chris Hogg in Shanghai says.

Some 70 million visitors-mostly Chinese-are expected to visit the Expo, which will be open for the next six months.

Chinese local media report that the cost of staging the event could be as much as $58bn (£38bn)-more than was spent on the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Some estimates say this figure could eventually be even higher.

Shanghai has increased security measures drastically in preparation for the event. An additional 8,000 police officers have been brought in to help Shanghai's 46,000 strong police force to patrol the city, Chinese state media says.

Residents living near the Expo site have complained about oppressive(强制性的) security measures. "It's just not convenient to get in and out any more," Dong, a local resident, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. Markets have been closed down to build Expo car parks, he added. The Expo is seen as an opportunity for countries to try to win favour with the Chinese, he adds.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, President Sarkozy-whose relationship with China has been testy(暴躁的) after he criticized a Chinese security crackdown in Tibet in 2008-said France and China would "think and work together".

Life is like a winding path that is surrounded by flowers, butterflies, and delicious fruit, but many of us spend much time looking for happiness around the next corner. We do not bend to enjoy the happiness that is ours just at our feet.

Happiness is all around us, but it often comes in small grains. When we gather it grain by grain, we soon have a basketful.

Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.

In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you.

Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

26. According to the first two paragraphs, happiness _________.

A. is around the next corner B. is surrounded by flowers

C. is like a winding path D. can be seen here and there

27. When you do something wrong, .

A. people beside you will lend you a hand to its correction

B. you will have no chance to challenge yourself

C. your classmates will laugh at you

D. people around you will help you out

28. Which is not true according to the passage?

A. When you get success, your friends will be very proud of you.

B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.

C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.

D. Happiness has nothing to do with money.

29. Why do we say "Happiness is not the same as money." in the last paragraph? Because .

A. money always brings happiness B. money doesn't always bring happiness

C. everything can be bought with money D. only rich people have happiness

30. Which is the title of the passage? ____________.

A. Happiness around you B. Happiness and Luck

C. Happy Life D. Life and Success
