Text One
M: Hello, This is Jack.
W: Hi, Jack. This is Wang Fang.
M: Wow! Wang Fang, How are you? Where have you been these days?
W: I just came back from Hawaii.
M: So how was it?
W: It’s great. You should see me. The new me.
M: What do you mean “the new me”? What did you do?
W: Well, do you remember my hair?
M: Yeah, it’s black, long and …
W: Well, now it’s brown, short and straight. It looks so great!
M: Wow! I won’t know you.
W: And there’s more. I walked and jogged every day. And I went swimming a lot. So good bye to fat. No more fat. Now I’m thin.
M: Oh, wait. I’ll run over to your home right now.
Text Two
W: Oh, you are going to have to forgive me!
M: Oh, what’s the matter?
W: Well, do you remember that I promised I would help you study physics on Saturday?
M: Yes, I remember.
W: Well, I hate to tell you this, but I’m afraid I cannot keep my promise.
M: Why not?
W: Well, you see, Terry, my cousin in Canada, is coming to spend holiday with us. But my father is on business in Paris and my mother is ill at home, so I have to meet him at the airport. Otherwise, I would be able to help you study physics.
M: I understand.
W: You know. I don’t make a habit of breaking my promise. I hope you are not upset with me. M: Not at all. These things often happen.
Text Three
W: Where did you grow up, Bob?
M: I grew up in Philadelphia.
W: What was your major at college?
M: History. My dream was to be a famous historian. I love history.
W: So what made you change your mind?
M: After I graduated, I tried to get a job at college in my hometown, but couldn’t. I didn’t want to move away. So I had to find something else to do.
W: So how did you get into the catering business?
M: Well, I was interested in cooking. My mother taught me to cook when I was a kid. Anyway, my uncle had a small restaurant, and my first job was helping in the kitchen there. I used to watch the cooks at work so that I could pick up their techniques.
W: And how long ago was it?
M: That was five years ago. Then a couple of years ago, I opened my own restaurant. It’s done fine.
W: Good for you.
Text Four
M: Hey, Laura. How’s it going?
W: Oh, Simon, hi! I’m doing fine. What are you up to?
M: School and work, mostly. I go to school this morning. And I work three nights a week at Cesar’s… you know, the new Italian restaurant downtown. How about you?
W: Right now, I’m busy with my two jobs.
M: Oh, that’s interesting. Let’s get together some night. How about Monday night?
W: Oh, I have a dance lesson that night. How about Tuesday?
M: Oh, on Tuesday I work in the evening. But how about Wednesday or Thursday?
W: Mmm… On Wednesday I have my dance class again, and on Thursday evening I work at the mall. Friday ?
M: Actually, every Friday evening I go to my health club. Usually I swim or …
W: Where do you go?
M: Silver Gym on East Main Street.
W: You’re kidding! I go to Silver Gym, too. I seldom go there on Friday, though. I usually go on Saturday.
M: Well, do you want to go this Friday night? About 6 pm? We can exercise, and then go to dinner or something.
W: Sure. Sounds good. See you then.
Text Five
W: Wow! You’ve brought lots of photos. Oh, what a nice family. Is she your mother?
M: Yes.
W: And who’s in the second picture?
M: Oh, this is my grandfather. He lives with us.
M: How about this picture? Who are the girls?
M: Well, the one on the right is Carla – she’s my sister. Um, the one on the left is Ellen. She’s also my … sister.
W: Oh?
M: And in this picture, they’re Lenny and Marty. They’re my brothers.
W: Wait a minute. How many brothers and sisters do you have?
M: Well, it’s a little hard to follow, but I’ll explain. This is my mother. And this is my mother’s husband Evan. My mother and father are divorced. And, Evan is also divorced. And he married my mother last year. He has two children, a boy and a girl, Marty and Ellen.
W: So actually Marty is your stepbrother and Ellen is your stepsister.
M: Yeah. We all just live together and we’re a family.
Text Six
M: Good morning. May I help you?
W: Yes. I want to know about the bus service between here and Detroit. I came here last week by train, but I like to try different ways of traveling.
M: Well, I’ll try to help you. Here is our timetable.
W: Thank you. It shows that there are eight buses a day that leave Cleveland to Detroit.
M: And the service is cheaper than the train.
W: Oh, yes. Why is that?
M: The bus trip takes a little longer than the train trip, and we do not have a dining car.
W: Is there a restroom?
M: Yes, we do have a restroom. And the bus is air-conditioned. The trip should be comfortable. W: How long is the trip?
M: We have express buses that take a little more than three hours. And we have buses that stop at several cities along the way. They’re cheaper, but they take more than four hours.
W: Can I use my return ticket for the train to pay for my bus ticket?
M: No, you will have to take that ticket to the train station. They will give you your money back, and then you can buy a bus ticket from here.
W: I see. Thanks for your help.
M: You’re welcome.
Text Seven
During his life Dr James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught PE and wrote several books. While he never thought it very important, Dr Naismith is today best known for one thing. He was the inventor of basketball.
Dr Naismith was born in Canada in 1861 and his first job was at a special sports school in the USA. One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Because it snowed heavily, the students could not go outside. He told James that they needed a sport the boys could play indoors and gave the teacher two weeks to think of something.
It was on the very last day that James came up with his idea. The “birth of basketball” is said to be on December 21, 1891, when two teams from the school played the first game. It was quite different from the basketball games of today. It had 9 players on each team and footballs were used instead of basketballs. Soon after, the game changed to 5 players on each side, using special “basketballs”.
Although Dr Naismith did not live to see basketball become the worldwide game it is today, in 1936, just three years before his death, basketball became an Olympic sport at the Games in Berlin.
