(D)

The Earth has a force that pulls things toward itself. We call this force gravity. This is something we live with all the time, and hardly ever think about it.But it is a most important factor in rocket operation and must be overcome if we are to get anywhere in space, or off the ground at all.

Take the throwing of a ball as an example. The harder the ball is thrown, the faster and higher it will go.What is the secret? Its speed. If we could throw the ball hard enough it would go up and up forever and never come down. The speed at which it would have to be thrown to do this is known as escape speed.Of course, we cannot throw a ball hard enough because the speed, required to escape completely from the Earth's gravity is seven miles per second, or over twenty-five thousand miles per hour.

Once escape speed has been reached by a spaceship, no further power is needed.A rocket aimed at the Moon, for instance, will "coast" the rest of the way because the Earth's gravity cannot then pull it back, and there is no air resistance in space to slow it down. This "coasting" is known as "free fall".That does not mean the rocket is falling down towards the Earth but that it is traveling freely in space without the help of power, like a bicycle coasting downhill.

Free fall is an important feature of space travel:it would be impossible to carry enough oil to supply powered flight all the time.

Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less. Here are some hints for reading effectively.

80.

Don't choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read.A book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly. To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often. It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary. It has no fan at all! On the contrary, a too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help. The two extremes may at last make you give up reading. So it's better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page.

81.

If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible.Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text. This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your "success", and your interest in reading is well stimulated. If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then.I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its "troublesome image".

  82.

To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then form your own ideas on some special issues.Try to scribble some lines - a very short journal, to express your ideas.Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors.Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing

  .

83.

Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English.Don't merely take English as a "test".Take it as an "entertainment" instead and you will enjoy it through learning.Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like.Try to read them as loudly and unpassionedly as you can. During this process, not only you can enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.

  84.

The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.

There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems.Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. They believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world.Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.

A few years ago, I realized that I had a fear of heights.Sometimes I would feel uncomfortable if I looked down from somewhere high, and the higher I got, the worse I felt. However, there were some things that made me nervous when I looked up at them - such as drop towers (极速下降塔).

About a month ago, my family and I went on a trip to Marineland -an amusement park with a sea animal theme. One of Marineland's attractions is a huge drop tower called the "Sky Screamer".My dad wanted to ride it, and he wanted to take me with him.He kept nagging me, and I finally gave in, because I wanted to face my fears.

Going up was terrible.I got stomachaches from just looking at the tower. When we reached the tower, we lined up and got seated on the ride. When it reached a few feet off the ground, it stopped for a moment, before sending us straight to the top at great speed.I squeezed my eyes shut and I held the handlebar as tightly as I could.A few seconds later my heart was in my mouth and I was screaming my lungs out.At the top, I opened my eyes and looked forward, not down.

I tried to prepare myself for the way down, but it didn't really help. There I was, with my eyes squeezed shut, holding the handlebar and again, screaming at the top of my voice. In fact, it was even worse than going up! But when I got to the bottom, I felt happy and relieved.I thanked my dad for forcing me to go on the ride, and I was pleased I had faced my fears.

So, was the "Sky Screamer" scary? Well, maybe just a little bit.
