We are going to take the College Entrance Exams in less than one year. However, many students still don’t know how to coordinate their study, rest and physical exercise when preparing for the Exams. They usually devote too much time to their study, which results in poor health and low efficiency of learning.
As the proverb goes, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. We’d better leave ourselves enough time to sleep since it enables us to learn our lessons more efficiently. What’s more, a strong and healthy body is the base for our further study and our future work and creative activities.
Therefore, as we are preparing for the Exams, don’t forget that rest, exercise and study are equally important.

1. W: The game is so exciting. What time is it?
M: It’s 3:40. They have only 20 minutes before it’s finished.
Q: What time is the game due to finish?
2. M: I spent so much time polishing my letter of application.
W: It’s worthwhile to make the effort. You know just how important it is to give a good impression.
Q: What do we know about the man?
3. W: Excuse me. I’d like to place an advertisement for used car in your paper.
M: OK, but you have to run your advertisement all week.
Q: Where is the conversation most probably taking place?
4. W: But what happens if it rains? What are we going to do then?
M: We’ll have to count on good weather. But if it does rain, the whole thing will have to be cancelled.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
5. M: Yesterday, we went to Joe’s house to listen to records and dance.
W: I heard that he had over 100 rock-n’-roll records. Is that true?
Q: What do we learn about Joe?
6. M: Are you going to see a film with me tonight?
W: No. I have to finish my composition which is due tomorrow morning.
Q: What will the woman do tonight?
7. W: Good evening, sir. Have you anything to declare?
M: No. That’s why I came through the door where the notice says “Nothing to Declare.”
Q: What’s the proper relationship between the two speakers?
8. M: Is there anything more to do before we leave?
W: I’ve closed all the windows and packed our clothes. You might call for a taxi as I lock the suitcase.
Q: What does the woman ask the man to do?
9. W: We can either take our children with us to the cinema or to my mother’s house.
M: Well, I’ll leave it up to you.
Q: Who will make the final decision?
10. W: It’s too bad you fell down during the race.
M: It was fortunate that I didn’t get injured.
Q: What is the woman feeling?

I had spent my last day in Rome visiting the teachers of the Art College and taking pictures
with them. And then, I had done some last shopping. I bought some presents: shirts, gloves, some
toys, one of which was an electronic alarm clock for my father.
In the evening, after waiting in the noisy airport building, I was glad to be sitting in the plane.
In a few minutes we would soon be up in the sky on our flight home.
But I had been mistaken. Ten minutes later, instead of enjoying the beauty of the evening sky
from above the cloud, I was sitting in a smoke-filled room with an airline official and a policeman
at my side. On the table in front of me was my suitcase.
The officials were polite. They asked me to show my passport, my ticket and my baggage
check. Then I was requested to open my suitcase and to spread out its contents on the table. Of
course, I did as I was told. The moment I placed the alarm clock on the table, the officials looked
at each other and smile.
I understood immediately that someone must have heard the ticking noise and reported to
the security.
Thank you.
Questions:
11. How did the man spend his last day in Rome?

Dear customers,
Are you worried by the rising crime rate? If you are, then you probably know that your house,
possessions, and relatives are increasingly in danger of suffering from the tremendous rise in the cases of burglary and attack.
Figures indicate an ever-increasing crime rate but it is only too easy to imagine “It will
never happen to me”. Unfortunately, statistics show that it really can happen to anybody and, if
you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim.
Fortunately, there is something definite which you can do. Protect Alarms can help to
protect your house, simple to operate and fairly cheap.
You must remember that possessing a Protect Alarm is no indication that your house is
packed with valuable possessions. It quite simply indicates to unwelcome visitors that yours is a
house they will not break into easily so they go on to an unprotected house where their job is made
a lot easier.
The free leaflet will tell you how we can protect. We can alarm your house quickly, easily
and cheaply. Write to us, and the address is in the leaflet. Postage is free. Or, telephone us on
32334400, where we have a round-the-clock answering service.
Questions:
14. What’s the occupation of the speaker?
15. What’s the intention of the speaker?
16. Why is a Protect Alarm important according to the passage?

M: Hello?
W: Hello, Roger. It’s Laurence.
M: Laurence! I haven’t heard from you for ages! How are you?
W: Fine. We’ve just got back from a few days away with some relatives down on the coast. Anyway, how are things with you and Millie?
M: Great… fine… everything’s fine. We’ve got all Millie’s sisters around for lunch at the moment.
W: Yes, I can hear you’re busy! I was just phoning to ask if you and Millie are doing anything
next Saturday night. If not, would you like to come for a meal? Patrick and Colin are coming
over, and we thought it would be nice if you were there, too.
M: We can’t, I’m afraid. An old mate of mine from college is getting married up in Scotland, and we’re going up there for the wedding. What a shame! It’d be nice to see you all again.
W: Yeah, it is a shame… I know, how about the following Saturday instead? I don’t think we’ve got anything planned that night.
M: Yeah, I think that should be fine. I’ll check with Millie and call you back if there’s any problem, but… no… that’d be great!
W: Great, well we’ll look forward to seeing you. Give me a ring in a week or so to arrange a time.
M: Okay, then. Thanks for calling. See you!
W: Yeah, see you!

M: Can you tell me a little about yourself?
W: Yes, I finished school in 2004.
M: I see that you did well in you “A” level. Why didn’t you go to university when you had left school?
W: I wanted to get a job because I had to help my parents, who had a big family to support then.
M: I see you are now a junior clerk in a trade company. Can you type?
W: Yes, my speed is 60 words per minute.
M: Why do you want to leave your job there?
W: I’d like a job where I can get more experience and learn about different kinds of work.
M: Can you work on Saturdays or Sundays if we need you?
W: Yes, I can.
M: If we offer you a job, when can you start?
W: I must give a week’s notice before I leave my present job.
M: I see. Please fill in this form now. If anything turns up, I’ll contact you.
