June 8th, 2000
Dear Uncle,
It was very kind of you to remember my birthday, and I thank you very much for the English-Chinese dictionary and for your good wishes. I have already begun to use the dictionary, and I love it.
I am glad to tell you that I won the first prize in spoken English contest held in our city recently. I am sure you will be glad to hear that, and I’ll do my best to work harder and make more progress.
Yours sincerely
Li Wei

The Value of Time
A proverb says “Time is money.” But in my opinion, time is even more precious than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time.
The time we can use is limited. Therefore, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As students we must not relax our efforts to learn our lessons so as to serve society and our nation in the future.
But it is pity that there were a lot of people who do not know the importance of time. They spend their precious time smoking, drinking and chatting. They do not realize that wasting time is equal to wasting a part of their valuable life.
In a word, we should form the good babit of saving time. Do not put off what can be done today until tomorrow.

Road Safety
Every year a lot of people are killed or injured in road accidents. How can we make the roads safer? Remember the following traffic rules.
When you ride a bike, keep to the right side of the road. Don’t cross the road or turn left at a red traffic light. Give a hand signal if you want to turn or stop.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways, right and left. If the road is clear, it is safe to cross. The correct way to cross is to walk quickly, but not to run. If you run across the road, you may fall down.
If you see small children or old people waiting to cross the road, it is a kind deed to help them to cross in safety. We should teach small children not to play or ride on the roads.
Always obey these rules, you’ll find it much safer to walk or ride on the road.

Our English Teacher
Our English teacher is a middle-aged woman. She has taught English for more than twenty years. She works very hard and has been a model teacher for many years.
She is kind to us. but she is rather strict with us. She always encourages us to speak and read more English. She often tells us that “practice makes perfect.”
She is very good at teaching and tries hard to make every lesson lively and interesting. She often gives us slide shows, teaches us English songs and helps us to put on short English plays.
She loves us and is always ready to help us. In fact, she is not only our good teacher but also our good friend. We all respect and love her.

Give Up Smoking
Smoking is a widespread habit even among school children. The number of young smokers is increasing.
It is reported that over two-fifths of the students in a certain school smoke, and some of them even steal money to buy cigarettes, This is terrible.
As we all know, smoking is harmful to our health. But it’s even more harmful to middle school students for it does great harm not only to their health but also to their mind.
Middle school students are future builders of the country. They should spend their time learning what is useful. So it’s really time that these young smokers made up their minds to give up smoking.

Dear Headmaster,
I’m writing to express my idea about our study at school.
As a Senior 3 student, we have to stay at school for nine hours to have lessons and spend at least three to four hours doing our homework at home every day. It takes us only an hour to do sports, so we hardly have any time to watch TV.
We feel tired because of the pressure of examinations and the high expectations from the parents.
I write this letter only to wish that you could have the teachers give us less homework so that we could have enough time to do what we want. In my opinion, the result of the examinations is not so important to us. We teenagers are eager to play and enjoy ourselves.
I’m looking forward to your good news.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
