                        E

Let's do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, and you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But don't be cheated by your energy: You're still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call " sleep debt "win this case something like six hours, almost a full night's sleep.

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It's a deficit (赤字)that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep. "People accumulate sleep debt gradually without being noticed," says psychiatrist William C. Dement, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Research Centre. Studies show that such short-term lack of sleep

leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects include obesity, insulin(胰岛素) resistance, and heart disease. A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we're losing one hour of sleep each night -more than two full weeks of sleep each year.

The good news is that, like all debt, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid. Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up. For the long-term lack of sleep, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself catatonic (有紧张感的)in the beginning of the recovery cycle: Expect to have ten hours' shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.

So earn back that lost sleep -and follow the orders of your inner sleep needs, and you'll feel better. "When you put away sleep debt, you become superman." Says Stanford's Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical capabilities that come with being well rested.

72. The example of sleep math is used to show .

   A. in what case you build up a sleep debt

   B. why you need six hours' sleep every night.

   C. why you are full of energy even when lacking sleep.

   D. you should drink coffee to keep energetic

73. The author begins Paragraph 2 with .

   A. an example B. a definition C. an order D. a story

74. By saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, Dement means .

   A. a superman always needs a lot of sleep

   B. you can become superhuman after you repay your debt

   C. you will be in a good state with enough sleep

   D. you will become superhuman if you don't make up for sleep debt

 75. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

   A. How can you keep energetic? B. Can you have a good sleep?

   C. What is sleep debt? D. Can you catch up on sleep debt?

                        D

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we,as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

                                                    68. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

   B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

   C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

   D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

69. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be .

   A. warmly welcomed at the airport

   B. offered a ride to his home

   C. treated hospitably at his home

   D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

70. The underlined words "generous with our time" in paragraph 3 probably mean .

   A. strict with time B. serious with time

   C. careful with time D. willing to spend time

71. A suitable title for this passage would probably be" ".

   A. Friendship between Chinese

   B. Friendship between Americans

   C. Americans' hospitality

D. Americans' views of friendship

After the climate summit in Copenhagen Saturday morning agreed to "take note" of the Copenhagen Accord, UN. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon concluded that "finally, we sealed the deal," BBC reports. He added that he was aware this was just the beginning of a process to create a binding pact to rein in greenhouse gas emissions(排放), but pointed out that the agreement would have "an immediate operational effect."

"It may not be everything we hoped for, but this decision of the Conference of Parties is an essential beginning ... The importance will only be recognized when it's turned into international law ...We mast transform this into a legally binding treaty next year," he said according to BBC.

Head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat, Yvo de Boer, was not that enthusiastic. In a press release from UNFCCC he stated:" We must be honest about what we have got. The world walks away from Copenhagen with a deal. But clear ambitions to reduce emissions must be raised significantly if we are to hold the world to 2 degrees,"

Because the promises, listed by developed and developing countries may; according to science, be found insufficient to keep the global .temperature rise below 2 degrees or less, leaders called for a review of the accord, to be completed by 2015.

"We .now have a package .to work with, and begin immediate action," said Yvo de Boer. "However, we need to be clear, that it is a letter of intent and is not precise(精确的) about what needs to be done in legal terms. So the challenge is now to turn what we have agreed politically in Copenhagen into something real, measurable and verifiable,"

 60. When will the decision of Copenhagen probably become a legally binding treaty?

   A. 2009 B. 2010 C. 2015 D. Not known.

 62. What can be inferred from this news report?

   A. The deal made at Copenhagen was a final one.

   B. The Copenhagen Agreement will have an operational effect at once.

   C. It'll be a tough challenge to keep the world temperature rise under 2 degrees in the future

   D. The Copenhagen Agreement is not precise about what needs to be done in legal terms.

63, According to the news report; it's most likely that Yvo de Boer's attitude towards the Copenhagen Agreement is:

   A. Very optimistic. B. A bit pessimistic.

   C. Not concerned. D. full of doubts.

                                                                            .
