Watch out! QRIQ, Sony’s robot, is a few steps ahead of you. It can dance and kick a football, and it is the world’s first “running” robot.

Until now robots could not run because they needed one foot on the floor at all times to remain stable. That all changed when Sony’s technology allowed QRIO to run.

QRIO might be the world’s first running robot, but it won’t win in a race. The robot’s run is more like a jog. At 23 inches tall and weighing 15 pounds, QRIO can travel 46 feet per minute, which is about 0.5 mph. If QRIO were an average human size, it would run a mile in 40 minutes. (Many humans can run a mile in about 10 minutes.)

And if QRIO falls, it will get right back up. QRIO is programmed to check its position after a fall. It then turns itself face up and stands up again.

QRIO can recognize people’s faces and voices. It has a special built-in camera that takes a picture when meeting people. It examines the pictures and remembers people.

QRIO even expresses feelings through movements, conversation, and the use of its lights. QRIO is a quite friendly robot. If you meet the robot, it will ask you what kinds of things you like and don’t like. QRIO remembers all of the facts, so it can have more conversations with you. The robot already knows tens of thousands of words, but can always learn more.

Don’t get too excited. This high-tech robot won’t be racing to your house any time soon. Sony says it has no immediate plans to sell QRIO.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit.

Jiuzhaigou is a very beautiful place. It is in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Region in Sichuan Province. Jiuzhaigou is a valley. It is more than 40 kilometers long. The green and golden trees, the lofty and multi-shaped mountains and the clear and colorful waters form the unique beauty of Jiuzhaogou. The water of Jiuzhaigou is the soul of the beauty. There are more than 100 lakes of different shapes in the valley. These lakes have wonderful colors. They are called “haizi”, which means son of the sea. It is these beautiful lakes that make Jiuzhaigou a fantastic place. Between the forests and the lakes, there are nine Tibetan villages. The name Jiuzhaigou means Nine Village Valley.

Jiuzhaigou was discovered because of a panda rescue program. The pandas were once endangered because the bamboo there was blooming. When people came to rescue the pandas, they were surprised by the beauty of Jiuzhaigou. After that, Jiuzhaigou became a protected scenic area.

In China, there is a saying which goes like this: No mountain is worth seeing after you have seen Mount Huang and no other body of water will attract you after you have visited Jiuzhaigou. The beauty of Jiuzhaigou cannot be described with mere words. The best way to enjoy this fairyland is to go there. See you in Jiuzhaigou.

Health and climate scientists have mapped(绘制地图) how climate change affects different parts of the world in different ways. The scientists point to the fact that changes in the past thirty years may, have been affecting human health. Possible effects include more deaths from extreme heat or cold, more storms and more crop failures in dry periods.

The health and climate scientists recently estimated that climate changes caused by human activity lead to more than one hundred and fifty thousand deaths each year. Cases of sickness are estimated at five million. And the W.H.O. says the numbers could rise quickly by the year of 2003.

Jonathan Patz of an environmental institute led the study. Professor Patz points out that climate scientists connected global warming with the heat that killed thousands in Europe in August, 2003. But he says poor countries least responsible for the warming are most in danger from the health effects of higher temperatures.

Professor Patz says areas in greatest danger include southern and eastern Africa and coastlines along the Pacific and Indian oceans. Also, large cities experience what scientists call a “heat island” effect that can make conditions worse.

Representatives from about two hundred countries hold a meeting in Canada, to discuss climate change. The ten-day meeting ends on December 9th. It is the first such United Nations meeting since the Kyoto Protocol (京都议定书) took effect earlier this year. The agreement aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and other heat-trapping (吸热的) gases sent off into the air.
