D

“I was only joking,” I told my 11-year-old son.

“It was not funny,” he said. “You hurt my feelings.” His blue eyes were full of tears.

And then I remembered all the times people had hurt my feelings. For examples, my father always teased me about my shortage of cooking skills.

“ Well , look at that,” he’d say, “you didn’t boil the water for the noodles today.” “You’d better find a husband who can cook, or he’ll be hungry all the time.” or “ Are you sure that’s safe to eat ?”

He was only joking, of course. The strange thing is that my father has never eaten anything I’ve cooked. The one time in my life I prepared a meal for my parents, he chose not to eat it. That hurt me, too.

Now, at 35 years old, I want to be in the field of self-development and respect. I help others  know and enjoy their own advantages. Yet, here I am, unable to get past the hurtful words my father said to me. Whenever I cook, his words come back to me. I don’t invite people over for dinner because I worry they will leave hungry and laugh at me . The one or two times a year that we do have guests, I start each meal with an apology (道歉).

We all have experienced teasing in our lives. Now think about the things you have said to your children, your friends or coworkers. Have you made an experience that may stop their dreams coming true? Have you laughed at them about their greatest shortcoming(不足), making it even harder for them to overcome (克服) it?

So, next time we are joking, we should look around and make sure that everyone is enjoying the jokes. Words said jokingly might be as dangerous as an incorrectly filled prescription (药方).
