Erik Weihenmayer was born with an eye problem. As a child, his eyesight(视力) became worse and then, at the age of 13, he lost his sight. However, he did not lose his heart to have a full and active life.

Erik is interested in many sports, and his favorite one is mountaineering. In 1995, he reached the top Mount Mckinley and then climbed the dangerous 100-meter rock wall of EL Capitan. Two years later, while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with his girlfriend, they stopped for a time at 13,000 feet above sea level-in order to hold a wedding(婚礼). In 1999, he climbed Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in South America. And then, in 2001, when he was 33, Erik successfully climbed Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world!

Erik invented his own way for climbing mountains. He carries two long poles(竿): One to lean(斜靠) on and the other to feel the way in front of him. The climber in front of him wears a bell to guide him. Erik is a good team member. He does his own work, such as setting up tents and building snow walls.

Although he could not enjoy the scenery, Erik felt the excitement of being on the top of the Everest. He hopes that his success will change how people think about a person who can’t see. “When they think about this, they will think about a person standing on the top of the world.”
