For travelers with a sense of adventure and who so want to experience some of the history and mystery of the ancient world, here is a list of cool destinations that you may want to consider for your next holiday.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Built in the 12th century, Angkor Wat (meaning “capital monastery”) was a temple in the ancient Khmer capital city of Angkor. It is Cambodia’s best-known tourist attraction and appears on the country’s flag. The temple is known for its    beautiful architecture and reliefs. You'll need at least three days to fully discover the delights of the magnificent site.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Machu Picchu was built high in the Andes Mountains of South America by the Inca in the 15th century. Although well preserved its exact purpose is unknown. It is famous throughout the world not only for its incredible design but also for the natural beauty that surrounds it. Give yourself a week to explore this magnificent site and make you’re fit as there will be a lot of climbing.
Stonehenge, England
The entire Stonehenge site was constructed over thousands of years. But why and how it was built remains a mystery. As the weather can be pretty bleak in winter and the crowds huge in summer, we suggest autumn is the best time to visit these monster rocks.
Pompeii, Italy
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., Pompeii was buried under many layers of ash, preserving the city exactly as it was when the volcano erupted. Because so many objects were preserved, archaeologists and visitors are able to better understand daily life in the ancient Roman Empire.

Read “A Pool near Rajpur” and answer questions 1 to 7.

A Pool near Rajpur

Ranji had been less than a month in Rajpur when he discovered the pool in the forest. It was the height of the summer, and his school had not yet opened; and, having as yet made no friends in this town, he wandered about a good deal by himself into the hills and forests that stretched away interminably on all sides. It was hot, very hot, at that time of the year, and Ranji walked about in his vest and shorts, his brown feet white with the chalky dust that flew up from the ground. The earth was parched, the grass brown, the trees listless, hardly stirring, waiting for a cool wind or a refreshing shower of rain.

It was on such a day-a hot, tired day -that Ranji found the pool in the forest. The water had a gentle translucency, and you could see the smooth round pebbles at the bottom of the pool. A small stream emerged from a cluster of rocks to feed the pool. During the monsoon, this stream would be a rushing torrent, cascading down from the hills, but during the summer it was barely a trickle. The rocks, however, held the water in the pool, and it did not dry up like the pools in the plains.

When Ranji saw the pool, he did not hesitate to get into it. He had often gone swimming, alone or with friends, when he had lived with his parents in a thirsty town in the middle of the Rajputana desert. There, he had known only sticky, muddy pools, where buffaloes wallowed and women washed clothes. He had never seen a pool like this-so clean and cold and inviting.

1.The first paragraph describes how Ranji went exploring in the forest ________.

[ ]

A.with his school friends

B.after school each day

C.without his parents' permission

D.despite the unpleasant weather

2.In the second paragraph, the writer wants the reader to feel that the pool was ________.

[ ]

A.well-known to local people

B.a delightful place to be on a hot day

C.popular with local children

D.a dangerous place for a boy on his own

3.The word “translucency” indicates that the water in the pool was ________.

[ ]

A.clear
B.light
C.visible
D.still

4.The trees are described as “listless”. This means that the trees were ________.

[ ]

A.bending in the wind
B.affected by the heat
C.covered with dust
D.growing close together

5.Water remained in the pool during the summer because ________.

[ ]

A.the water was clean and cold

B.there were rocks to dam the water

C.trees hung over the pool to shade it

D.the pool was in a cool forest

6.The reader can assume that Ranji ________.

[ ]

A.owned very few good clothes

B.found new experiences difficult to cope with

C.felt homesick for the town where he once lived

D.felt safe wandering in the forests near Rajpur

7.What is Ranji likely to do next?

[ ]

A.chase some buffaloes away from the pool

B.enjoy swimming in the pool

C.tell his parents about the pool

D.wait for his family to arrive

My name is Lin Hui. I like to tell stories about people who work together. What is even better is when countries help each other and build a good friendship. An excellent example of this happened when Britain and China worked together to bring the Milu deer back to China.

Milu deer, a kind of animal with large horns(角), used to be common in China long ago. Like other deer they lived together and ate grass and the soft parts of trees. Milu deer were often killed for food or sport. The Ming and Qing dynasties(朝代) did not protect them and many were killed. That is how the Milu deer disappeared from China.

Luckily before all of them were killed, some were taken to Britain to improve the environment of the beautiful park which belonged to the Duke of Bedford. He liked them so much that he took them from China to Britain. Milu deer liked the cool, wet weather in England and their number increased year by year. As a result, when in 1985 the government of China wanted to bring back the Milu deer, the Duke of Bedford was able to help. The first deer came back to China to the Nanhaizi Milu Park 20 kilometers south of Beijing and the centre in Dafeng, Jiangsu province.

The deer certainly seem happy to be back in China because their number has grown quickly. There are now so many of them that a new park has been opened for them in Hubei Province. At the moment the Milu deer live in centres where they are being well protected and cared for. It is hoped that one day there will be enough animals to let them live in the wild again.

Last week, all the teachers and students of our school watched a special performance by some disabled
(残疾的) people. The first program was a dance named "The light of life". To my surprise, all the dancers
had lost one of their legs. As they were performing, I could see how they had to face so many difficulties.
However, they showed us many wonderful programs. From these programs, I could see how lively their
minds were.
The two persons who came out next shocked us all. The first one was a singer. He was very young but
unfortunately he had lost both of his hands in a big fire. The song he brought us was "Late Autumn" and he
sang it in such a low and sweet voice. Though it was warm spring, I felt a little cold when I heard the song
as if it was really late autumn. "How much love and feeling is hidden in my heart? I wish to hold your hands
again. " Hearing this, I couldn't keep back my tears.
The other one was also a young man. He lost both of his arms when he was six. From then on, his feet
became his "hands". However, he could manage a number of things with his feet. What moved us most was
his feet writing. The two words "Flying High" expressed his wishes.
"If your wings are gone, your heart can still fly," said Zhang Haidi, a disabled writer.
In the world, there are many disabled people, yet most of them don't give in (屈服). They have strong
wishes and beautiful dreams. Just as Zhang Haidi said they could fly.
Disability doesn't mean complete failure. Once you try hard, miracles (奇迹) will happen sooner or later.
I believe where there is a will, there is a way.
