A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar( 奇怪的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.
Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?'' Only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail--that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

To Zhang Hui
Southern Street No. 4
Shamian Island
Guangzhou
China 510133
Thursday 9 May 1995
Dear Zhang Hui,
We have now been in Australia for five days. The plane trip was great. The weather here is lovely! People complain that it is too hot but it is not nearly as hot here as it's been at home lately. We were supposed to stay at a hotel in the city but we moved to Bondi Beach, which is 8 kilometers from the city. It takes half an hour by bus from the centre of Sydney. We’ve been swimming every day-- the water here is so refreshing. Yesterday we went to Taronga Park Zoo which is only a short ferry ride across Sydney Harbour. We saw koalas(树袋熊) and kangaroos (袋鼠) and many other Australian animals. You wouldn't believe it, but while I was eating a sandwich for lunch a kookaburra (笑翠鸟) swooped down and stole my sandwich from the table right in front of me. We all laughed although it left me feeling a little bit hungry all afternoon. From the chair lift we had a close up view of the magnificent giraffes (长颈鹿). The animals in that zoo certainly have a great view of Sydney. From the elephant enclosure you can see the Harbour Bridge, the beautiful Opera House and the city of Sydney gleaming (若隐若现地) across the harbour. Tomorrow we are traveling to Greenville to stay with my host family. I miss you and will write again soon. With love from your friend,
Liu Mei

Is there a something strange high up in the world's tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear? Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man?
No one knows. This mystery (迷) has puzzled (困惑) the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footprints (脚印) in the snow. They looked like the footprints of a very large man. But men don't walk without shoes in the snow!
In 1996, another climber saw more than footprints. Far off, he saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran very quickly.
Fifteen years later, newspapers, had new stories about the "something". A mountain climber said he had seen the "snow man" walk slowly across the snow, far below him. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back pictures of large footprints. The pictures showed clearly that the snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an ape (猿) man? The mystery grew! And the mystery keeps growing.
