7、When people advise your children to get an education, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to give manpower for your society.
Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you are occupationally(职业上)dead, unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison and you can successfully stop study in primary schoo1.
Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA(学士学位), you should start to find a job. You have to put on the brakes now. If you do go for a master's degree, make sure it is an MBA and only from a first—class university. Otherwise, the famous law of diminishing(报酬递减律)begins to work.
Do you know, for example, that long—distance truck drivers make more money a year than full professors? Yes, each driver was paid $28,000 in 1997 while a full professor managed to get $27,930.
A PhD is the highest degree you can get, but except in few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial aim, you are facing a not very bright future. There are more PhDs unemployed in this country than in any other part of the world by far.
If you become a PhD in English or history or political science or languages or—worst of all-in philosophy, you take the risk of becoming over—educated for our national demands.
Thousands of PhDs are selling shoes, driving taxis, vomiting on tables and filling out applications month after month, and then may be taking a job in high school or college with the pay much less than a door—keeper makes.
1.According to the writer, the society expects education to turn out people who will _______.
A.raise their payment B.become specialized in some way
C.have a bright future D.meet the demands as a source of manpower
2.If you don't want to be occupationally dead, you_____.
A.should look for a job in a primary school
B.must at least get a high school diploma
C.have to change your name for Bernard Shaw or Edison
D.should go on learning and become a doctor on physics or chemistry
3.The underlined phrase "put on the brakes" (in Para 3) means "_______"
A.stop learning for a high degree
B.take up master's degree at once
C.go on studying in a first—class university
D.find any interesting job
4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Neither Bernard Shaw or Edison finished high school.
B.There are more PhDs than the society demands.
C.The higher education level is, the more money you will earn.
D.If you are overeducated, you can not easily get a good job.

5、Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle(航天飞机)Challenger, in June, 1983. The achievement of Sally Ride, America's first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable。Students from two high schools in New Jersey, however, are probably to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight.
Norma didn't travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her. Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her subject, made up the first ant colony(群体)to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects.
The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem didn't occur in space, but on the ground after Challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was moved. The hot, dry desert air dried out the colony's container and the ants died from lack of moisture(水分).
The project was termed success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to pinpoint(精确找到)what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from reoccurring on future missions. They don't want to be discouraged either by the demise of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space.
1.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Sally Ride,America's first woman astronaut.

A.death B.colony C.insect D.moisture
3.We don't think the project was a failure. This is because_______.
A.everything went as smoothly as expected
B.the students had pinpointed exactly the reason
C.something important had been learned
D.the students had succeeded in the experiment
4.We can conclude that ants _________ on the next space trip.
A.will have to be kept alive in a container full of water
B.will have to be sent into space with the first woman astronaut
C.should be put into a container where there is enough food
D.should be put into a container which is not too dry

3、Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets(彩票). The tickets cost only $0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot(积累奖金)in history.
More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from l to 80. The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million, but that little chance certainly didn't affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.
Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they'll probably never have.
But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized(合法化的)gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.
Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice(恶习), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.
1.The main idea of the passage is that__________.
A.lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys them
B.playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock market
C.many people buy lottery tickets, but lotteries cause disagreement
D.lotteries are nothing but legalized vice
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Politicians like lotteries because they don't have to pay extra taxes.
B.The popularity of lotteries in America actually is social progress.
C.Some critics don't like lotteries because many poor people waste money on them.
D.People love the lottery because it is a stock market.
3.In just one hour in the last few days, the Pennsylvania lottery sold tickets totaling______.
A.$1.62 million B.$1.82 million C.$9.6 million D.$87 million
4.People who are addicted to playing lotteries should___________.
A.join a support group B.kick the habit
C.win the lottery D.save every cent
