Every August on the island of Heimaey, off the southern coast of Iceland, young people often take a walk along the streets throughout the night. What’s more, their parents allow them to stay out. Why? The children of Heimaey are going to save young puffins — small black-and-white seabirds.
The cliffs(悬崖) above the town are home to a large group of puffins. The birds dig holes(挖洞) all round the cliffs. These holes are their homes. Their young stay in the holes for about seven weeks. Then they begin to leave. Some move slowly on their undeveloped wings and feet down to the northern Atlantic Ocean that surrounds Heimaey. There, they swim, which they can do naturally, and learn to dive for fish. Others, however, may lose their way at night and find themselves in the town instead. On the ground, the young seabirds are in trouble. Because their wings are not fully developed, they cannot take off quickly to sea and safety. The birds then become a good meal for cats and other animals.
For many years, islanders have helped the young puffins. Early at night in late August, children carrying thick paper boxes and lights hurry to the seashore to catch puffins. They spend most of the night running after the birds. They put the birds they’ve caught in boxes and take good care of them.
The next morning the children take the puffins to the ocean and set them free. The birds will live at sea until they are at least two years old. Then they will return to the cliffs to build homes of their own for their families.
Will the children of Heimaey always come to save puffins? “Yes,” answer the boys. “We look forward to it. The best time for us is setting the birds free.”

How do you pay for things? Do you usually use cash(金钱), or do you like to pay by credit card(信用卡)? If you are like a lot of people, you probably have at least one credit card. Also, you might use it more often than you probably should.
Credit cards first became popular in the 1920s. At that time, businesses, such as hotels and companies, gave credit cards to their best customers(顾客). Unlike today’s credit cards, customers could only use these cards at the shops or business that gave out the cards. Customers had to pay for things in full. They couldn’t pay for something a little at a time.
In 1950, a businessman named McNamara started a credit card company — Diners Club. Unlike earlier credit cards, this card could be used by customers at many restaurants. Customers liked the card because they didn’t have to carry a lot of cash with them. Restaurant owners liked the card, too. Why? They found out that customers usually spent more money when they could pay by credit card.
In its first year of business, Diners Club issued 200 card s. The customers who got the cards from Diners Club could use them at 27 different restaurants. Today, Diners Club has about 8 million customers, and they can use their cards in over 7.6 million businesses in more than 200 countries.

阅读理解 阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容,在每小题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。
When we talked about intelligence(智力), we d o not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kind of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tried to find out all he can, and then he acts at once and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed(羞愧的) that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “not-bright’ children. In fact, they are two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really want to find out about life. He tries to come into contact with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own-dream world — He seems to have a wall between him and life in general.
( )1. According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to ______.
A. get some high scores on some tests
B. do well in school
C. deal with life
D. have a lot of book knowledge
( )2. In a new situation, an intelligent person______.
A. knows more about what might happen to him
B. is sure of the result he will get
C. cares more about himself
D. keeps his mind on what to do about the situation

A. try not to feel ashamed B. learn from his mistakes
C. try to find all he could D. make sure what result he would get
